The ruling mullahs embarked on a variety of indoctrination campaigns both in public and on the pulpit to mobilize Iran's faithful out to the front lines. In order to entice Iranians to volunteer -- or, in some cases, to volunteer their children -- promises of eternal peace and pleasure in the afterlife were guaranteed. "Plastic keys, ostensibly good for opening the door to heaven, and to erotic and culinary delights, were ... given to these young men, who walked to their deaths," wrote Stanford University's Abbas Milani in a 2007 essay for Boston Review. The Iranian government was "so certain" that these martyrs would be sacrificed, explained Iran watcher Michael Ledeen back in 2008, "that these little children were provided with plastic keys that were said to open the gates to paradise." Thus we have the legend of the paradise keys. Many Mideast analysts and observers -- yours truly included -- have referenced these keys throughout the years. In some tellings these keys are said to have been made of plastic -- in others, brass or gold -- and imported from either China or Taiwan . So pervasive is the keys story, that they have even made appearances in relatively obscure (and somewhat disturbing, NSFW) punk and folk songs. Just one problem: There is virtually no photographic or video evidence that these keys ever existed. I contacted several trusted Iran experts and analysts, and while none were willing to outright reject the validity of the paradise keys story, none had ever seen one, nor could they say with certainty that they ever truly existed. Upon first appraisal, this might strike someone as rather odd. For a country believed by many to be bent on martyrdom and sacrifice, you would think, said Mideast analyst Meir Javedanfar, that the ruling mullahs would have gone out of their way to preserve and promote these artifacts. "While it is possible that such keys existed," said Javendanfar, "the fact that there is no visual verification of them gives credibility to those who question their existence." Or does it? After all, one obvious answer as to why these keys are so hard to come by is that so few of their original owners -- often young boys and older men -- survived long enough to boast about their war souvenirs. As Reuel Marc Gerecht of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies put it, "many of these folks lived to die." Indeed -- though concrete casualty numbers are difficult to come by -- we know that thousands of Iranian volunteer soldiers ( Basijis ) marched to their deaths in that long, bloody war of attrition with Iraq. The last thing these martyrs were likely concerned about was the preservation of the one-way ticket around their necks. And that, to analysts like Gerecht, is the more salient point. While the gruesome nature of the Iran-Iraq War would ultimately turn many would-be martyrs away from the cause, it's the ones who didn't walk away from Iran's revolutionary ideology after the war, according to Gerecht, who should worry us. "A fraternity of death developed. One of the reasons that some of the senior IRGC are so scary," explained Gerecht, the former CIA case manager, "is that they survived the war and walked away still white hot. As if their survival had been vouchsafed by God." It's with that in mind that many Iran experts say this regime cannot and should not be contained. If, after all, the upper echelons of today's Islamic Republic were forged in the blood and sacrifice of the war against Iraq, then who's to say those same true believers wouldn't use a nuclear weapon against Israel , or threaten America and its global assets? What's to prevent that "death cult" from martyring the entire state of Iran? There is, however, reason to believe that even Iran 's elite Revolutionary Guard can be targeted and contained. Setting aside the guard's messianic reputation, it is, by most measurements, an organization in search of the world's more sublunary pleasures . The afterlife may be a paradise, but the here and now has been pretty good to the IRGC. Moreover, even if we were to assume the worst about Iranian war tactics back then, national fratricide certainly isn't unique to the Islamic Republic. As Matthew Duss of the Center for American Progress noted in a 2011 article for Foreign Policy , two 20th Century regimes that actually did martyr millions of their own citizens -- China and the Soviet Union -- still posed a mostly terrestrial and containable challenge to Western policymakers. That the newly-empowered mullahs appealed to Iranian patriotism -- and fear -- in order to mobilize poorly-trained civilians to the front lines is important and noteworthy, but so too is understanding the besieged Iranian mindset at the time of the war. An Iraqi dictator with imperial ambitions -- left mostly to his own devices by the international community, and aided by much of the West -- declared war on a society already in revolutionary flux. As the eight-year-long war went on, neighboring Arab regimes -- due in no small part to Iranian instigation and terrorism in the Gulf and the Levant -- coalesced around Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime -- and against Tehran. Desperate nations have resorted to desperate (and questionable) war tactics throughout history. So what makes this particular regime so different? This, according to analysts like Duss, is why the paradise keys matter. "For U.S. hawks," said Duss, "the keys function as a distillation of that 'martyr state' theory, a physical representation of Iran's 'irrational' religious ideology." Such efforts to dehumanize an enemy can prove doubly effective, says Duss, when the slaughter of children -- possibly against their will -- is offered in addendum to the plastic keys tale. In other words, the paradise keys tend to say less about the tactics and intentions of modern-day Iran, and more about the Iran debate in Washington and other Western capitals. "The keys fall into the legend category," said Iranian-American journalist and author Hooman Majd, "but with enough circumstantial evidence to make it more than just a myth." Though he has never personally seen one of these keys, Majd has heard the story enough to believe they likely existed -- perhaps handed out only in certain circumstances, and by only certain mullahs. So is the story true? Maybe. All wars have their share of exaggerated legends and tales rooted in shades of truth. Interpretations of how one side chose to win or lose a war -- as demonstrated in the recent Yasukuni Shrine controversy -- can have a lasting effect on foreign policy and relations years after the final shots have been fired. In the case of Iran, how the country chose to fight and defend itself in the Iran- Iraq War still holds policy ramifications to this day. Rational regimes can be contained, but can an irrational one? Origin of the concept of the Devil's advocate Originally, Pope John XV (sometimes designated Pope John XVI, 985-996) developed the canonization process, and ordered it to be applied to himself immediately after his death. Then, in 1587, and because of growing criticism and abuse of the procedure, Pope Sixtus V (1585-90) added to the canonization process by establishing an office for a promotor fidei, popularly called the Devil's advocate (Latin: advocatus diabolus) whose job it was to argue against the canonization of the candidate. He was to publicly take a skeptical view of the candidate's character, question the evidence, and argue that any miracles attributed to the candidate were fraudulent, etc. For more than four centuries, this process served a useful role in ensuring that canonizations did not proceed without due care, and hence the status of sainthood was not easily achieved. Pope John Paul II made sure that that process didn't apply to him, and amidst widespread opposition from Catholic groups, he was beatified only six years after his death. Later in time, his move to abolish the office of the Devil's advocate was seen as a purposeful act to prevent public scrutiny of his early life after his death. The Catholic groups who openly expressed deep concern about the Vatican's rush to sainthood, and the media uproar that their comments created, underscored a significant and irrepressible unease amongst millions of everyday Catholics who have no say in the governance of their Church. Just one month before the endless run-up to the beatification of Pope John Paul II, and to offset the growing criticism from its own ranks, Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes stated (on April 1st, 2011), that the late Pope was not being beatified because of his pontificate, but because of the way he lived the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love. That event was a happy and joyous occasion witnessed by an estimated TV audience of 2.1 billion people, while the Roman procedure was a solemn ceremony to credit a deceased Pope with spiritual acclaim. The long-standing rules of the canonization process were specifically changed by Pope John Paul II himself to ensure that he would be glorified in his death and speedily beatified. It is little-known that there are around 100 sets of Secret Police files in Polish archives that record various aspects of the life of Karol Wojtyla, and the first that is publicly available is dated May 3rd, 1946. As this high profile trial moves into its second month of testimony, many people are following the fate of Monsignor William Lynn, 61 who is accused of transferring paedophile priests to unsuspecting parishes to hide their earlier child sex abuse crimes, and Rev. He and Lynn have both entered not guilty pleas, whileas a third co-defendant, defrocked priest Edward Avery, entered a guilty plea on the eve of the trial and is now in prison. Maybe it is the attitude of the Vatican in the whole proceedings as the Pope and his cardinals, while mouthing pious platitudes about their concern for the well-being of children in the care of the Church, are cowering like mangy mongrel dogs behind the protection of Vatican City's sovereignty status. Maybe it is the new low of depravity to learn about a 'sick' priest who made schoolboys strip naked as they played Christ in a sadomasochistic play, and then whipped them with leather straps until they had cuts, bruises and welts on their bodies. Vatican mired in scandal The trial revelations are not isolated incidents, and the disturbing message coming from the Philadelphia courtroom is typical of every Catholic diocese in the world, as witnessed by the explosion of priesthood sex scandals in Ireland, Australia, Germany, Chile, Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, Sweden, Haiti, Holland, Poland, England, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Croatia, France, Norway, the Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Austria, Belgium and Brazil, where 1700 priests were recently accused of sexual abuses on little children. An honest Vatican-produced 'Catholic Registry of Dangerous Paedophile Priests' would contain tens of thousands of names, including that of a recent pope, and it is probable that the Holy See has such a registry securely hidden away in its Secret Archives. Calling the Church of Rome to accountability It is difficult to find the correct metaphors to describe the magnitude of events occurring in the Catholic Church today; cataclysms, seismic shifts, twisters, or hurricanes, are not enough to cover evidence of a growing clerical criminal phenomenon that is beyond the ordinary sphere of human understanding. In September last year, SNAP, the priest abuse survivor's network, filed the powerful complaint, alleging a worldwide priest child abuse cover-up in the Catholic Church alleging crimes against humanity, and last month, supplemented its original claims with additional charges after receiving a spate of new allegations from nearly 500 victims, witnesses, and whistleblowers from many countries. SNAP's claim was supported by Amnesty International, the world's largest human rights organization that accused the Vatican and the Catholic Church with human rights violations for failing to protect children from abuse, and for failure to comply with international mandates to protect children. Adding to the Pope's woes, the recent appointment of Mrs. Fatou Bensouda, the mother of two children as the new International Criminal Court lead prosecutor, may be causing him and the cardinals to squirm a little about the eventual outcome of SNAP's ICC court case. Faced with a deluge of negative world-wide publicity, the Holy See and its priesthood have some dark days ahead, and as the national and international prosecutors storm the Vatican's walls, it's every old pope and cardinal for himself. Growing public loathing One aspect of the crisis confronting the Vatican today is the widespread collapse of support for the hierarchy on the part of the traditionally loyal and dutiful laity. The Holy See's obsessions for pretentious costumes, lacy frocks and gilded papal ceremonies helps make them numb towards the plights of sexually abused children. A grand jury report accused the archdiocese of failing to investigate accusations Philadelphia (CNN) -- Opening arguments started Monday in the first case in which a Roman Catholic archdiocese official is accused of covering up evidence of suspected sexual abuse of children. Monsignor William Lynn and the Rev. James Brennan appeared before Common Pleas Judge Teresa Sarmina inside a nearly filled Philadelphia courtroom. The attendees had to pass through a metal detector and surrender all electronic devices before entering the courtroom. Commonwealth prosecutor Jacqueline Coelho told jurors in her nearly hour-long opening statement that Lynn's role was to protect priests, the church and privacy "at any cost." Lynn, dressed in all black and wearing a priest collar, listened intently as Coelho argued that he knowingly covered up incidents of sexual abuse, including alleged acts by Brennan, and "ignored common sense and placed children at risk." Lynn, 61, who served as the secretary for clergy under former Philadelphia Archbishop Anthony Bevilacqua, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the alleged assaults. From 1992 until 2004, Lynn was responsible for investigating reports that priests had sexually abused children. Brennan, 48, is accused of assaulting a 14-year-old boy in 1996. Both pleaded not guilty in April. Their defense attorneys were slated to give their opening statements Monday afternoon. Last year, a Philadelphia grand jury report accused the archdiocese of failing to investigate claims of sexual abuse of children by priests. The grand jury report led to the Philadelphia district attorney's office criminally charging four Philadelphia priests and a parochial school teacher with raping and assaulting boys in their care, while Lynn was accused of allowing the abusive priests to have access to children. Defrocked priest Edward Avery was slated to go on trial with Lynn and Brennan, but he pleaded guilty last week to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and conspiracy to endanger welfare of child, according to court documents. Avery was sentenced to two and a half to five years in prison. He is scheduled to report for his sentence on April 2. The plea agreement does not require Avery to testify against Lynn. Judge Sarmina advised jurors to "keep an open mind" and "not speculate about" Avery's absence. The Philadelphia scandal could open a historic chapter in the abuse crisis, church watchers say, by changing the way the American criminal justice system deals with church abuse. The charges are unusual because they go beyond accusations against priests and included a church higher-up charged with covering up the abuse, which church experts say has never happened in the United States before. Avery and Charles Engelhardt are charged with assaulting a 10-year-old boy at St. Jerome Parish in Philadelphia in 1998 and 1999. Avery was defrocked in 2006. Bernard Shero, a teacher at the school, is charged with assaulting the same boy there in 2000. Engelhardt and Shero, who pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse and conspiracy charges in April, are facing sex abuse charges and will be tried separately in September. Cardinal Bevilacqua, who died on January 31, testified 10 times before grand juries in 2003 and 2004. A final grand jury report said it had no doubt that the cardinal knew about the danger posed by the accused priests and his actions endangered thousands of children in the archdiocese. Bevilacqua served as archbishop of Philadelphia from February 11, 1988, to October 7, 2003, the archdiocese said in announcing his death. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on June 28, 1991. Lynn would face a maximum of 14 years in prison if convicted of all charges, according to the district attorney's office. After the release of the January 2011 grand jury report, Cardinal Justin Rigali, who later resigned as Philadelphia's archbishop, placed Lynn on administrative leave. A total of 23 priests in the Philadelphia area have been placed on administrative leave by the archdiocese, 21 on March 7, 2011.
