Dr. Robert H. Goddard, American Rocketry Pioneer.

Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard is considered the father of modern rocket propulsion. A physicist of great insight, Goddard also had a unique genius for invention. It is in memory of this brilliant scientist that NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., was established on May 1, 1959.

By 1926, Goddard had constructed and successfully tested the first rocket using liquid fuel. Indeed, the flight of Goddard's rocket on March 16, 1926, at Auburn, Mass., was as significant to history as that of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk.

Primitive in their day as the achievement of the Wrights, Goddard's rockets made little impression on government officials. Only through modest subsidies from the Smithsonian Institution and the Daniel Guggenheim Foundation, as well as the leaves of absence granted him by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute of Clark University, was Goddard able to sustain his lifetime of devoted research and testing.

Goddard first obtained public notice in 1907 in a cloud of smoke from a powder rocket fired in the basement of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute physics building. School officials took an immediate interest in the work of student Goddard. The school's administration, to their credit, did not expel him. He thus began his lifetime of dedicated work.

In 1914, Goddard received two U.S. patents. One was for a rocket using liquid fuel. The other was for a two- or three-stage rocket using solid fuel.

At his own expense, he began to make systematic studies about propulsion provided by various types of gunpowder. His classic document was a study he wrote in 1916 requesting funds from the Smithsonian Institution so that he could continue his research. This was later published along with his subsequent research and Navy work in a Smithsonian Miscellaneous Publication No. 2540 (January 1920). It was entitled "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes." In this treatise, Goddard detailed his search for methods of raising weather-recording instruments higher than sounding balloons. In this search, he developed the mathematical theories of rocket propulsion.
Toward the end of his 1920 report, Goddard outlined the possibility of a rocket reaching the moon and exploding a load of flash powder there to mark its arrival. The bulk of his scientific report to the Smithsonian was a dry explanation of how he used the $5,000 grant in his research. The press picked up Goddard's scientific proposal about a rocket flight to the moon, however, and created a journalistic controversy concerning the feasibility of such a thing. The resulting ridicule created in Goddard firm convictions about the nature of the press corps, which he held for the rest of his life.

Goddard's greatest engineering contributions were made during his work in the 1920s and 1930s. He received a total of $10,000 from the Smithsonian by 1927, and through the personal efforts of Charles A. Lindbergh, he subsequently received financial support from the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation. Progress on all of his work, titled "Liquid Propellant Rocket Development," was published by the Smithsonian in 1936.

Goddard's work largely anticipated in technical detail the later German V-2 missiles, including gyroscopic control, steering by means of vanes in the jet stream of the rocket motor, gimbal-steering, power-driven fuel pumps and other devices. His rocket flight in 1929 carried the first scientific payload, a barometer, and a camera. Goddard developed and demonstrated the basic idea of the "bazooka" two days before the Armistice in 1918 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. His launching platform was a music rack. In World War II, Goddard again offered his services and was assigned by the U.S. Navy to the development of practical jet assisted takeoff and liquid propellant rocket motors capable of variable thrust. In both areas, he was successful. Robert H. Goddard died on Aug. 10, 1945, four days after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan.

Goddard was the first scientist who not only realized the potentialities of missiles and space flight but also contributed directly in bringing them to practical realization. Goddard had a rare talent in both creative science and practical engineering. The dedicated labors of this modest man went largely unrecognized in the United States until the dawn of what is now called the "space age." High honors and wide acclaim, belated but richly deserved, now come to the name of Robert H. Goddard.

On Sept. 16, 1959, the 86th Congress authorized the issuance of a gold medal in the honor of professor Robert H. Goddard.

Dr. Goddard's Major Contributions:
-Explored the practicality of using rocket propulsion to reach high altitudes, even the moon (1912)
-Proved that a rocket will work in a vacuum, that it needs no air to push against
-Developed and fired a liquid fuel rocket (March 16, 1926, Auburn, Mass.)
-Shot a scientific payload in a rocket flight (1929, Auburn, Mass.)
-Used vanes in the rocket motor blast for guidance (1932, New Mexico)
-Developed gyro control apparatus for rocket flight (1932, New Mexico)
-Received U.S. patent for of multi-stage rocket (1914)
-Developed pumps suitable for rocket fuels
-Launched a rocket with a motor pivoted on gimbals under the influence of a gyro mechanism (1937)
"It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow." - Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard

A woman in Peru lost it when she found her husband talking with another woman that she assumed was his mistress. She was so furious, in fact, that she threw the other woman off a cliff .

The entire incident, which occurred in January, was caught on video by a security camera. The footage is now going viral.

Lissette Lupo Mamani is seen on video aggressively approaching who she thinks is her husband's lover, grabbing her by her hair and throwing her to the ground. She then proceeds to push the woman off a nearby cliff into a ravine.

It was not immediately clear what the husband, Renzo Zanabria Huanca, and Sandra Bruna Morales were talking about or why they were meeting. However, Zanabria quickly fled the scene and abandoned the woman.

According to reports , Bruna fell about 20 feet but manage to escape the attack with nay minor cuts and bruises.

"She later denied being the husband's lover, telling a local media outlet that Zanabria had harassed her repeatedly, leading his wife to falsely believe they were having an affair," Gawker notes .

An Orlando police sergeant is claiming gender, age and disability discrimination after she says she was fired because breast implants she'd received while recovering from breast cancer prevented her from wearing a bulletproof vest.

Master Sergeant Rhonda Huckelberry, a 25-year veteran of the Orlando Police Department, has filed a lawsuit against the department after it fired her for failing to wear the vest, despite Huckelberry's being allowed to work without a vest on doctor's orders for the last 17 years.

Following her dismissal, Huckelberry was brought back for light duty.

Until three years ago, Huckelberry was a supervisor on the department's tactical crime unit, according to WFTV in Orlando. However, after a controversial officer-involved shooting, she was kicked out of the unit following a bad review from a supervisor.

In 2010, the tactical crime unit - which normally investigates violent crimes - was ordered by Huckelberry to arrest a man in a Target parking lot.

According to a federal lawsuit first obtained by WFTV, Huckelberry suspected one of the men of stealing her husband's credit card, which is why she ordered the TCU to arrest him.

During the bust, however, suspect Rogelio Cortes tried to flee in a truck and was shot four times by officers. Authorities later claimed that he tried to ram them with the truck, but video surveillance footage of the incident showed that Cortes' truck was rammed by an Orlando Police Department patrol car, which pushed him towards the officers, which prompted them to open fire.

After the shooting, Cortes was charged with theft and attempted murder of an officer - charges that were later dropped.

Huckelberry was cleared of all wrongdoing in the shooting, and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney said the officers had a right to shoot because it appeared the suspect was trying to flee.

Since Huckelberry's poor review following the shooting, she claims that every assignment she's requested has been given to a younger, male officer.

Huckelberry blames Rooney's poor leadership for the alleged discrimination.

Mentally unstable violent Liberal Teacher Goes Ballistic, Beats Christian Ministry Workers With Her Purse

Check out the FUPA on that hot Liberal babe!! I would call it a camel toe,
but I think it's the whole dam camel!!

A woman who described herself as a teacher of the Constitution was caught on video clashing with members of a controversial Christian organization. Bradlee Dean, a figure TheBlaze has covered in the past, founded "You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International," a ministry that delivers assemblies and speeches in public schools. Members of this organization recently engaged a woman in a contentious conversation - one that led her to physically attack the Christian activists.

The incident, which was captured on video and later released by the group, shows the volatile exchange that unfolded at a 7-11 gas station in Florida. The debate erupted as Dean's ministry was apparently trying to nab support for the Bible and Christian values in public schools.

A press release that the organization distributed following the incident explains what happened in detail (strictly from its own perspective, of course):

The woman verbally and physically attacked two ministry workers Elizabeth Ilse and Chase Schomberg. "Ilse was standing behind one of her ministry's tables while distributing Christian literature to those visiting the gas station. She simply said, 'Hello,' to the woman, but after approaching and reading the sign on the ministry's table that said, 'Support Christianity in Public Schools, The Constitution, and Honoring Soldiers,' the woman viciously attacked the cause by screaming 'shame on you for wanting Christianity in schools,' calling Miss Ilse a 'bigot,' and stated that 'Christians are the problem.'"

She threatens to call police, then yelled, "I'll tell police you are not just harassing, but are assaulting me." Then she blasts the cameraman with her bag.

She speeds off, but returns a short time later to talk with police. She doesn't approach the ministry table again, but the police asked the ministry workers if they wanted to press charges against her. The ministry and Dean have not decided whether to press charges as of yet.

In a short, edited video, the woman can be seen and heard telling Dean's staffers, "I know what's in our Constitution and you don't." Then, she claims that she teaches the Constitution, charging that the nation's most central document advocates for the "separation of church and state."

From there, the clash between the two parties intensifies with the aforementioned details coming to fruition.

Watch the clip, below:

Now, it should be noted that it's unclear how the debate between the two parties commenced. TheBlaze called Dean staffer Jake MacAulay to ask for a more complete and unedited clip. Following the call, he sent us a link to five minutes of footage that provides a bit more context.

The longer clip shows the woman demanding that the ministry workers move away from both her and her vehicle. While she repeatedly asked the individual filming the incident to stop, the footage continued to be captured and these pleas were ignored. While not excusing her actions, it does help explain them.

After apparently hitting the cameraman with her bag, she screamed, "Get away from my car!"

Watch the more complete video, below:

As the release notes, the ministry has not decided whether or not to press charges against the woman.

I recently spent a month in Italy with my wife road tripping from North to South and all through Sicily, I took loads of footage and pictures but also experimented with a few timelapse shots, here's one I took of a sunrise off our balcony in Taormina, Sicily. It's of the famous 'Isola Bella'. Hope you enjoy. Cheers! Gix.

Tornado Touches Down On Denver Airport Runway

19 June 2013
The National Weather Service says a tornado briefly touched down over the east runways of Denver International Airport.

Thousands of travellers and workers there were forced to take shelter in bathrooms and stairwells.

There are no reports of damage or injuries, and local television footage showed the airport's normally busy terminal was empty during the tornado warning on Tuesday.

Weather service meteorologist Kyle Fredin said a 97-mile-per-hour wind gust was clocked at the airport just before communications with weather instruments there were briefly knocked out.

Dark clouds blanketed parts of the horizon over the plains to the east.

Airport officials say some flights headed to Denver were diverted elsewhere.

As the storm passed, police briefly blocked traffic on a major interstate that leads to the airport.

Another twister touched down in La Junta, Colorado, on Monday, knocking down power lines but causing no injuries.
