A plane was "on fire" flying over central London an eyewitness has said.

One person told Sky News: "As you looked up you could just see the flames being chucked out of the engine ... It was on full fire when we saw it."

Both runways were shut at Heathrow Airport where the British Airways aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing due to an "aircraft fire."

The incident is not thought to be terror related and all passengers are safe.

A statement from British Airways said: "The BA762, Heathrow to Oslo service, returned back to Heathrow shortly after take-off due to a technical fault.

"The Airbus A319 aircraft was carrying 75 customers. The aircraft landed safely and emergency slides were deployed and we are
currently caring for our customers.

Searching for the Bedouin father who killed his two little girls; Police station chief dismissed for not preventing this murder

Two days after the murder of two young girls in a Bedouin community near Arad (S.Israel), the commander of the Arad police station and two other officials were dismissed from their posts following a severe oversight - a failure to respond to a complaint filed by the girls' mother against their father one day before the killing.

The bodies of two girls, aged two and four, were found in a house in the Bedouin village of Al Furah near the southern town of Arad Tuesday. The bodies of both girls bore signs of strangulation, apparently with the use of a cord. The girls were in the custody of their father, who lived in Al Furah with his second wife, while the girls' biological mother was living in East Jerusalem.

Police are searching for the father, who has been missing since the bodies were found.

The girls' mother, Abir Dandis, said she received a phone call telling her that her elder daughter was killed by her father, who was enraged by her ex-wife's rendezvous with her daughters last week, apparently against his will. She turned to the Ma'ale Adumim police branch, where she said her entreats to look into her daughters' safety were ignored by the officers on the pretext that they don't deal with residents of the territories.

They directed her to the Arad police station, where she said her appeal was dismissed wholesale, and the officers failed to take her seriously - because she was a resident of the Palestinian territories and a Bedouin. Dandis's lawyers said officers at the Arad station showed blatant contempt and told her to go home.

The findings of an internal probe found those who handled the complaint filed by the girls' mother to be lacking in the department of reporting, command and professionalism - "a failure that goes across police ranks all the way up to the station commander," wrote Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino in a statement.

Chief Superintendent Yoni Zeitek and two of his subordinates were discharged from their posts following the oversights.

"At least I did what I had to do," said the mother. "I was concerned for my daughters, and he took them from me. Now at least they will be buried close to me. He prevented me from seeing them. Now I could visit the grave, which is what comforts me."

Dandis decided to donate her daughters's organs. Her lawyer filed an application on her behalf to bury the girls in east Jerusalem rather than in the Negev.

Regarding the murder investigation, much still remains unclear. The girls' stepmother, suspected of obstruction of justice, is set to be brought for remand at the Beersheba Magistrate Court. Police suspect she may helped the father to flee. The defense counsel, attorney Uri Fishermen, said "the case is shrouded in mystery." The stepmothers' two minor sons were detained as well. One of them has since been released and the other, 17-years-old, was remanded until Sunday.

An MDA source said about the murder that "it was a horrifying sight, especially because the girls were so young. Just finding their bodies and declaring them dead was a traumatic experience for the entire MDA crew."

Global
anti-Islamic media networks have about new democratic horizon in
Pakistan with the recent poll. All that they want is safe sanctuary for
NATO terror syndicates in that Islamic nation to serve the anti-Islam
cause of western powers. .
However, world
expects Pakistan leaders Sharif and Zardari be different this time for the sake of Pakistan and
Muslims.

But
power struggle seems to have resumed between top political parties, PPP and MLNs
and could cause immense damage to the general health of an already destabilized
Pakistan and its people besieged by NATO terror infrastructure.

Having
lost the elections to his arch rival
Sharif, President Asif Zardari whose Peoples' Party has lost the polls
is busy making quick appointments to key posts. Lately, Wazir Ali Khoja was
removed from his post of Chairman and Managing Director National Investment
Trust (NIT). Before his dismissal the government had removed three heads of
public sector organizations: Arif
Hameed, MD, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL); Zuhair Siddiqui, MD Sui
Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and retired Brigadier Khalid Khokhar, MD Pakistan
Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC).

Many
political parties have been talking about pre-poll and during the poll rigging
but none have raised voice against such terminations.

Muslim
League is yet to assume power and the power has not been transferred to newly
elected members, elected members have not taken oath and even the names of new
prime minister and finance minister have not been announced officially but
posting and transfers are being made.

The
PML-N wonders what is forcing the interim government to take important
decisions while the new set-up is going to change within 10 days.

PML-N
leader Shahbaz Sharif has warned the caretaker prime minister not to make
appointments to certain key posts at the behest of President Asif Zardari whose
Peoples' Party has lost the polls. . Sharif has told him to respect the people's mandate
as he was legally, morally and politically obliged to respect this mandate and
warned of a stern stance if the caretakers did not change their attitude. ,

MQM
has announced to boycott the re-poll in NA-250. MQM's senior leader Raza Haroon
said that efforts were made to snatch the party's mandate in Karachi. The ECP
on Friday rejected the MQM petition which sought re-polling in the entire
NA-250 constituency of Karachi. The ECP declared that re-polling would only be
held in 43 polling stations of NA-250 out of total 180 polling stations where
allegedly polling was not held or delayed these stations on 11th May.

It
is said that appointment of professionals as heads of public sector enterprises
was aimed at improving performance of these entities. However, often these
heads are appointed to serve the political agenda of appointing authorities. The
key items on agenda include paving way for appointment of party activists; allocating advertisements to favorite media
houses and above all siphoning of funds by granting contracts to favorite entities.

The public sector enterprises that have been ruined include PIA, Pakistan
Steel, and electricity generation and distribution companies. Entities that
have been used to generate funds to meet shortfall in revenue collection are
OGDC, PPL, PSO and Sui twins.

If however such moves are being made at the federal level one just can't rule
out such violations at the provincial levels.

In
a surprising development, the lawyer who had filed a petition in the judges'
detention case has withdrawn his complaint against former president retired Gen
Pervez Musharraf. The decision by Advocate Chaudhry Mohammad Aslam Ghumman came
a day before the hearing of the case by the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court at
former president Pervez Musharraf's Chak Shahzad farmhouse which has been
declared a sub-jail.

Interestingly
nepotism, corruption and violation of good governance continued during the PPP
led government despite the fact that Chaudhry Nisar Ali belonging to PML-N
occupies the top slot of Chairman Public Accounts Committee.

Therefore,
it may not be wrong to say that political parties criticize each other but have
common motives. Surplus staff of PIA and Pakistan Steel just can't be removed
because activists of many political parties are there that follow the rule 'I
scratch you back and you scratch my back'.

Almost
all the political parties, PML-N being on the top, were accusing PPP-lead
coalition of posting the favorites, but dismissal of those even before assuming
charge creates even worst examples of nepotism by PML-N. There were complaints
that PML-N that ruled Punjab for five years, kept the favorites in key position
during the interim set up to influence polling results.

Undoubtedly,
political parties play 'musical chair game', let their favorites plunder and
the next government allows them to go home without any accountability. Loyalties
of turncoats are bought so that they could also help the new bosses in
siphoning out funds of the public sector enterprises (PSEs). It is on record
that annually PSEs swallow around half a trillion rupees of tax payers' money.
A cynic commenting on metro bus project of PML-N said, 'it was only to
facilitate Ittefaq Steel (own by Sharif family) to sell its products'.

It
is only half truth because the project serves residents of Lahore only, whereas
the condition of public transport throughout Punjab remains pathetic.

Pakistan politicians do not worry about the nation
or people because they know the all powerful CIA-Pentagon has taken almost full
charge of Pakistan and is controlling the leaders as well.

It is the common notion among Pakistani elites
that Pakistan regime by puppet Zardari cannot be expected to do anything to end
NATO occupation of Pakistan.

With
the dramatic arrival of former General P Musharraf it was expected that there
could be serious fight between military and political parties but now with Musharraf
in jail, the leading political parties have resumed their historic or traditional
power struggle to push in their own private profit agenda rather than Pakistan's
general good. .

One
completely fails to understand that even after so much destruction in the
country and genocides of Pakistanis, the politicians behave like US stooges.

You
call it crude fate of Islamic Pakistan?

Or,
maybe, something else?

"Most prayers in this room begin with a request to bow your heads. I would like to ask you not to bow your heads. I would like to ask that you take a moment to look around the room at all of the men and women here, in this moment, sharing together this extraordinary experience of being alive and of dedicating ourselves to working toward improving the lives of the people of our state.

This room in which there are many challenging debates, many moments of tension, of ideological division, of frustration. But this is also a room where, as my Secular Humanist tradition stresses, by the very fact of being human, we have much more in common than we have differences. We share the same spectrum of potential for care, for compassion, for fear, for joy, for love.

Carl Sagan once wrote, 'For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.' There is, in the political process, much to bear. In this room, let us cherish and celebrate our shared humanness, our shared capacity for reason and compassion, our shared love for the people of our state, for our Constitution and for our democracy -- and let us root our policymaking process in these values that are relevant to all Arizonans regardless of religious belief or nonbelief. In gratitude and in love, in reason and in compassion, let us work together for a better Arizona."

Marijuana: The next diabetes drug?

By Maia Szalavitz , TIME.com

updated 4:45 PM EDT, Thu May 23, 2013
TIME.com) -- Toking up may help marijuana users to
stay slim and lower their risk of developing diabetes, according to the
latest study, which suggests that cannabis compounds may help in
controlling blood sugar.
Although marijuana has a well-deserved reputation for increasing appetite via what stoners call "the munchies," the new research ,
which was published in the American Journal of Medicine, is not the
first to find that the drug has a two-faced relationship to weight.
Three prior studies have
shown that marijuana users are less likely to be obese, have a lower
risk for diabetes and have lower body-mass-index measurements. And these
trends occurred despite the fact that they seemed to take in more
calories.
Why? "The most important
finding is that current users of marijuana appeared to have better
carbohydrate metabolism than nonusers," says Murray Mittleman, an
associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the lead
author of the study. "Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they
appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to
maintain a normal blood-sugar level."

The research included
over 4,600 men and women participating in the National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2010. Among them, 48% had
smoked marijuana at least once in their lives, and 12% were current
cannabis smokers. The authors controlled for other factors like age,
sex, income, alcohol use, cigarette smoking and physical activity that
could also affect diabetes risk.
Even after these
adjustments, the current marijuana users showed fasting insulin levels
that were 16% lower than those of former or never users, along with a
17% reduction in another measure of insulin resistance as well. Higher
levels on both tests are associated with Type II diabetes, which is
linked with obesity.
Marijuana users also had
higher levels of high-density lipoprotein, the so-called good
cholesterol, which can protect against heart disease. And the regular
smokers also boasted smaller waistlines: on average, they were 1.5
inches (3.8 cm) slimmer than the former users and those who had never
smoked cannabis.
Researchers don't yet
know how to explain these correlations -- and since the study was not a
controlled trial, it's not clear whether marijuana or some other factor
in marijuana users' lifestyles actually accounted for the beneficial
effects.
Studies showed, however,
that the cannabinoid brain receptors affected by marijuana are deeply
involved in appetite and metabolism. But the exact details of how the
compound alters the relationship between appetite, caloric intake and
insulin response isn't obvious yet.
One clue, however, may
lie in the effects of a diet drug that was developed to have the
opposite effect that marijuana has on the brain. That drug, rimonabant,
produced significant weight loss and a drop in fasting insulin levels by
affecting certain cannabinoid receptors in the exact opposite way that
THC, marijuana's main psychoactive ingredient, does.
This action is complex:
rimonabant doesn't simply block the receptor and keep the natural
cannabinoids from activating it. Instead, while the natural cannabinoids
elevate the normal level of activity already going on in the system,
rimonabant lowers it so the result is precisely the reverse of
activating the receptor naturally.
However, because of
psychiatric side effects like increasing suicide risk, rimonabant was
pulled from the European market and never approved in the United States.
TIME.com: Reverse engineering the marijuana 'munchies:' What causes binge eating?

How could both marijuana
and a compound that has the opposite effect of pot act on the same
brain receptors and lead to weight loss?
Natural marijuana
includes many different potentially active compounds, and one of them --
rather than THC -- could be responsible for this effect. One potential
candidate is a substance called cannabidiol, which also affects
cannabinoid receptors, but in a different way from the way THC or
rimonabant does.
Another possibility
involves tolerance: repeated use of a drug can make receptors less
sensitive over time. "The most likely explanation is that prolonged
cannabis use causes the (receptors) to lose sensitivity and become
inactive," says Daniele Piomelli, a professor of pharmacology at the
University of California, Irvine, who was not associated with the new
research.
"This has been shown to
happen in people who smoke marijuana. This weakening of (these
receptors) translates into a lower risk for obesity and diabetes because
the inactive receptor would be unable to respond to our own
cannabis-like molecules, which we know are important in keeping us
chubby."
While marijuana may
initially promote appetite and overeating, in the long run it has the
opposite effect because it desensitizes cannabinoid receptors and may
even protect against obesity.
So don't skip the gym
and break out the bong just yet: there's still not enough data to tell
whether marijuana, like alcohol, could have health benefits in
moderation. Mittleman says the study relied on self-reported use of
marijuana, which can be unreliable. However, he points out that since
people are more likely to hide drug use than they are to falsely claim
it, the findings could even underestimate marijuana's effects.
TIME.com: Marijuana slims? Why pot smokers are less obese

But whether that's true,
and whether marijuana might be a window into understanding how to best
control glucose and insulin to prevent diabetes, isn't known yet.
"It is much too early to
say," says Mittleman. "We need much more research to better understand
the biologic responses to marijuana use. We really need more research to
allow physicians and patients to make decisions based on solid
evidence." An editorial that accompanied the study also urged government
action to reduce barriers to such research.
Even with 18 states now
approving marijuana for medical uses, the politics of pot will always
overshadow research efforts to understand how cannabinoids work in the
brain -- or affect disease. But, as Piomelli says, "the (new) study
suggests that smoking marijuana (may) protect people against obesity and
diabetes." And following up on that finding could yield new insights
into how to tackle one of our biggest public-health issues.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

Zimmerman defense releases texts about guns, fighting from Trayvon Martin's phone

The defense team for George Zimmerman, the man charged with second-degree murder in the Florida shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, has released a trove of texts and photos from Martin's cell phone - but it's not clear whether they'll be admissible in trial.

The newly released evidence, posted to a website run by Zimmerman's defense team on Thursday, includes texts from Martin where he discusses being suspended from school and smoking marijuana. He also shows an interest in guns in several texts.

This comes just days before a key hearing next Tuesday that will determine the admissibility of certain evidence at the trial.

Martin, a black 17-year-old, was shot to death by Zimmerman on Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla., in a case that set off racial tensions around the country. The 25 photos released by Zimmerman's team include some of Martin that have already circulated widely online, as well as some new ones, including one where Martin shows his gold teeth to the camera while sticking up his middle fingers, and a close-up picture of a gun that the defense says was taken from Martin's camera, although it's not evident from the photo who is holding the gun.

Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer of white and Hispanic descent, has pleaded not guilty, claiming he shot Martin in their gated community after Martin attacked him.

In one of the text conversations, sent 12 days before his death, Martin tells a friend he has been suspended from school for fighting.

"Why you not in school?" a text he receives asks.

"Suspended."

"I thought you was going out with ur friend," the reply says.

"Naw my ol g say she dont want me home caus she think ima get in mo trouble," he texts back.

Martin's texts also indicate he may have been curious about guns.

"U gotta gun?" reads a text from Martin's phone, sent on Feb. 18, 2012, to a friend of his who was on the phone with him on the night of the shooting.

"You want a 22 revolver" asks someone in a text he receives that day.

Three days later, Martin mentioned a caliber of gun while asking a friend in another text, "U wanna share a .380 w. ?"

Other texts released allude to problems Martin was having at home and with authorities.

"My mom just told me i gotta mov wit my dad," says one from Nov. 22, 2011. "She just kickd me out."

Later that day, a text says, "Da police caught me outta skool."

Marijuana references are scattered throughout the texts. Some of the newly released photos show Martin blowing smoke and what appear to be marijuana plants.

Jeff Deen, a former assistant state attorney in Florida and the head of a state agency that represents criminal defendants, said that strict rules having to do with character evidence will likely make Martin's texts and photos inadmissible at trial.

"What does his mom saying he needs to live with his dad for a while say about why he was shot? Nothing," he said. "Generally, reputation evidence is not admissible in court."

But Mark O'Mara, the lead defense attorney for Zimmerman, said he will try to use the new evidence during Zimmerman's trial on June 10.

But an attorney for Martin's family argued that the pretrial evidence release consisted of "irrelevant red herrings."

"Is the defense trying to prove Trayvon deserved to be killed by George Zimmerman because of the way he looked?" Benjamin Crump said in a statement on Thursday.

"If so, this stereotypical and closed-minded thinking is the same mindset that caused George Zimmerman to get out of his car and pursue Trayvon, an unarmed kid who he didn't know. The pretrial release of these irrelevant red herrings is a desperate and pathetic attempt by the defense to pollute and sway the jury pool."

Martin's death spurred a national conversation about guns and Florida's expansive "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law, which allows people to use deadly force if they believe they are in danger of being injured or killed. In April, Zimmerman waived his right to a pre-trial "Stand Your Ground" immunity hearing, guaranteeing his June trial before a jury.

On Thursday evening, Zimmerman's defense team also filed a request for a delay in the trial.

George Zimmerman's Lawyer Reveals New Evidence To Fox: Trayvon's Pictures Of Gun And Weed

by Andrew Kirell
3:41 pm, May 23rd, 2013
George Zimmerman 's lawyer Mark O'Mara
appeared on Fox News this afternoon to champion new evidence his team
plans to use in defense of his client's innocence in the alleged 2012
murder of Florida teen Trayvon Martin . New photographs and text messages show a "three-dimensional image of Trayvon," O'Mara said while describing the new evidence.
The first piece of evidence was a photograph extracted from Martin's
cell phone, showing a hand holding a gun. O'Mara wouldn't say whether he
believes that hand belongs to Martin, but that if the court decides to
focus on the "broader" picture of both Zimmerman's and the late
teenager's pasts, then it will become a relevant question."If Trayvon Martin's propensity for violence becomes relevant, then I
think the jury can consider the fact that he has several pictures of a
gun," O'Mara explained of why he might consider the photograph
admissible in court.
O'Mara also revealed the images and text messages related to marijuana that were found on Martin's phone

Asked by Megyn Kelly
how these could possibly become relevant in court, the defense attorney
explained: "We know that there was pot in Trayvon Martin's system the
night of the event. One of the state's experts has said that that level
of THC in his system, while it may not be enough to get you arrested for
DUI, could definitely have an impact and make you impaired."
O'Mara also claimed that text messages found on Martin's phone reveal
that the deceased teenager "had involved himself in some street
fighting." The defense lawyer cautioned once more that these pieces of
evidence will only become relevant if the court decides to consider "who
Trayvon Martin was" rather than just the events that occurred within
the moments before his death.
Asked by Kelly to assess Zimmerman's chances in court, O'Mara
concluded: "He's innocent. He acted in self defense from day one... He's
going to be acquitted."

Elon
Musk's "Summer of Revenge Tour" continues. His electric-car company,
Tesla Motors, just cut the government a $451.8 million check, which
means that Tesla has paid off its entire Department of Energy loan plus
interest. "Following this payment, Tesla ( TSLA ) will be the only American car company to have fully repaid the government," the company boasted (emphasis Tesla's).Of
all his recent moves, this one must be especially sweet for Musk.
Critics have long taken swipes at Tesla and its all-electric hippieness
for relying on a federal handout. The most public of such barbs arrived
from Mitt Romney during the presidential debates, when he described
Tesla as a "loser"
alongside Solyndra and Fisker Automotive. Even back then, it seemed a
bit silly to lump Tesla-a company employing thousands of people at an
American car factory-in with that group of green lollygaggers. And now
that Tesla has paid its way off the government dole, Romney may have
sealed his fate as that rare capitalist-cum-politician rooting against a
successful American car company. (Although Sarah Palin has recently threatened to keep him company.)The
loan repayment follows a number of recent announcements from Musk,
including Tesla's first-ever profit, a higher-than-expected sales
forecast, a $1 billion fund raising round, and its Model S sedan earning
the highest auto test ratings ever from Consumer Reports. The
company's share price has soared over the past year, from $25.52 to an
$87.24 close on Wednesday. The massive runup in Tesla's shares is partly
explained by an epic short squeeze, which is the other part of Musk's
Summer of Revenge.Tesla got a $465 million loan from the DOE in
2010 as part of an Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program.
The company, which has made some previous payments, had nine more years
to pay off the loan. Tesla's rival Fisker, also a recipient of a DOE
loan, recently hired advisers to help it weigh bankruptcy and
restructuring options after laying off much of its staff."I would
like to thank the Department of Energy and the members of Congress and
their staffs that worked hard to create the ATVM program, and
particularly the American taxpayer from whom these funds originate,"
Musk said in a statement. "I hope we did you proud."
