Now that the former Philadelphia abortion doctor has been sentenced to life in prison and the case's gag order lifted, Taggart is speaking out about what he found. Taggart and his team began searching Gosnell's properties for fetal remains in February 2010 following an FBI raid of the doctor's West Philadelphia clinic, the Women's Medical Society. Inside Gosnell's West Philadelphia home, the doctor spared no expense on high-end appliances, large flat-screen TVs and a piano, but Taggart says the 72-year-old surrounded himself with filth. "He just lived in squalor," said Taggart. "He would leave plates of food on the floor. There was stuff everywhere in the bedroom. You couldn't see the bed." Gosnell sat at the piano and played Chopin as police donned bio-hazard suits to investigate the contents of his home's basement. "As soon as they went down into the basement, they were covered in fleas," Taggart said. "He actually gave us a bottle of flea repellent and said, 'See what a nice guy I am? I told you there were fleas in the basement.' He said 'I didn't have to tell ya's'" Investigators also visited Gosnell's shore home in Brigantine, N.J. Taggart says the home was not well-kept, but that the property was "beautiful." "It backed up to the bay, he had a beautiful like four-slip boat slip," he said. The Philadelphia Police Crime Scene Unit traveled down the Atlantic City Expressway to search for the remains of unaccounted fetuses. "We went down there because we thought maybe some of the babies were thrown into the bay," he said. "There's a lot of babies that are still unaccounted for that we don't know where they're at." The team ventured into the bay and pulled up several crab traps owned by Gosnell to see if there were remains inside. However, nothing was found. New Jersey authorities also sent a dive team into the bay before Taggart's search and were unable to locate any remains. "I believe they are either buried out there or I don't know where they are. We've looked, we've looked for three years," he said. Taggart also recounted his time inside the Women's Medical Society, calling the clinic, located at 3801 Lancaster Avenue, unforgettable. "The smells were just unbearable," he said. "You could tell there was death somewhere." Taggart found dead babies stuffed inside a refrigerator. But it's what he and other officials found as they searched room-by -room that he says will be forever burned into his memory. "Opening up the cabinet and seeing all the feet," he said. "I'll remember that for a long time." Those feet were severed from babies following abortion procedures. Prosecutors say Gosnell would deliver some babies alive, despite giving them medication in utero meant to stop their heart. The doctor and his staff would then snip their necks with scissors to ensure death. Investigators said baby body parts would clog toilets after women delivered them in stalls inside the clinic. But for the first time, Taggart describes how remains were uncovered in the break room sink. "They were shoving body parts down the garbage disposal," said Taggart. "To the point where they plunged it one day and an arm popped out on Lancaster Avenue." The clinic, though not opened, still stands today. Gosnell, who was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder in the deaths of three babies, was given two consecutive life sentences in two of those verdicts. He struck a deal to avoid the death penalty by giving up his right to an appeal. On Wednesday, Gosnell was sentenced to a third consecutive life sentence for the murder of the third baby. He also was given an additional two and a half to five consecutive years in the involuntary manslaughter death of former patient Karnamaya Mongar. The attorney for Mongar's family says they plan on suing both Gosnell and the City of Philadelphia. Gosnell was also sentenced to concurrent sentences for 229 violations of Pennsylvania abortion regulations, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. The former doctor also pled guilty to federal charges related to illegal narcotics distribution. Considering that he was named, according to the AP, in more than 40 malpractice suits, the clinic head would purportedly perform abortions for caucasian women in cleaner locations (he assumed whites were more likely to complain about him). 2) In addition to the murderous allegations being waged against Gosnell, eight former employees of the clinic have pleaded guilty (some to third-degree murder) and have spoken in great lengths about the terrifying conditions at the clinic. 3) A 15-year-old girl allegedly helped facilitate abortions - including on potentially live babies - at the clinic. Ashley Baldwin, now 22, claims she worked nearly 50 hours per week. Even more shocking, she allegedly helped give women the drugs needed for the procedure - and apparently assisted throughout. Baldwin said that she saw aborted babies move on at least two occasions following abortions (in one instance, she said "the chest was moving"). 4) Gosnell purportedly useduntrained and low-paid staff to conduct nearly 1,000 abortions each year. The charge for a procedure in the horrific conditions mentioned? Between $350 and several thousand, depending on how far along the pregnancy was. Prosecutors believe he made millions from the practice. Authorities claim the clinic brought in about $15,000 per day. 5) Speaking of "untrained," prosecutors claim, according to the Gospel Coalition, that Gosnell is not certified to work in either gynecology or obstetrics. 6) In the grand jury report, the clinic was said to smell of animal urine and blood stains were on blankets and furniture inside of the office. Not surprisingly, sterilized instruments were unheard of inside the establishment. And somehow the state had failed to inspect - or even visit - the clinic since 1993. 7) In March, Adrienne Moton, a medical assistant at the clinic, provided sickening details about her alleged actions at the clinic, claiming that she snipped the spines of at least 10 babies; she said that another worker - and Gosnell himself - did the same. But that's not the worst part. Moton also claimed that she once killed a baby after it was delivered in a toilet by cutting its neck with scissors. Moton plead guilty and has been in prison since 2011. 8) Another former employee, Sherry West, shared yet another horrifying story. She claims that she was once called to the back room at the clinic, where aborted babies' bodies were apparently kept on a shelf. Once there, West heard a live baby among the bodies cry out. The screaming child "really freaked" her out, she told the court. "I can't describe it. It sounded like a little alien," she said, noting that she previously referred to the babies as "specimens," because it was easier to mentally handle what was going on at the clinic. 9) Then there's Robyn Reid's story. She was only an 87-pound teen when she went to the clinic in 1998. Accompanied by her grandmother, she was looking for an abortion. But once she made it to the office, Reid changed her mind. But Salem-News.com writes that the doctor allegedly forced an abortion on her. "Gosnell ripped off her clothes and restrained the girl. It's big news in Philadelphia, but nationally, not so much. The lack of coverage is a problem for a growing chorus of conservative and media critics, who allege that the scant national media attention can be attributed not to the courtroom drama but the politics of abortion. Dr. Kermit Gosnell was an abortionist, meaning that any coverage of the trial risks painting the pro-choice movement in an unflattering light. In a statement issued last week, 20 conservative leaders called for an end to what they described as a "media blackout" and "censoring" of the trial for political reasons. "The horrific excesses of the abortion industry exemplified by Gosnell and Planned Parenthood are major, national news stories any way you look at them. But the pro-abortion liberal media are determined to hide them from the public," said the April 4 statement led by the conservative Media Research Center and signed by former Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer , columnist Kellyanne Conway and Family Research Council President Tony Perkins . "The media have a solemn duty to the American people to report the news, not just news that helps the positions they support. I bet not nearly as much as you have seen about Rice ." Not every murder trial receives prominent national coverage, but the Gosnell case would seem to contain all the ingredients of must-see television: a formerly respected community leader accused of unspeakable acts; the death of a young immigrant woman; a parade of former employees offering graphic testimony on the gruesome deaths of more than 100 just-born infants; and even the implication by the doctor's lawyers that the charges have been motivated by racism.
