State files motion to keep defense from using Martin's school records, texts, social mediaPublished On: May 13 2013 11:47:58 AM EDT Updated On: May 13 2013 07:40:39 PM EDT
ORLANDO, Fla. -State prosecutors in the case against George Zimmerman are pushing to keep Zimmerman's attorneys from bringing testimony about Trayvon Martin's past during the trial.

The state said in motions filed on Friday they want to prevent Zimmerman's attorneys from bringing up Martin's personal life, including his school records, previous suspension from school, fights, text messages sent prior to his death unless related to case and his social media use.

The motion also says the state wants to prevent the defense from using Martin's toxicology report, which showed the level of marijuana in Martin's blood the night he was shot and killed.

The state's filings suggest they fear the defense may try to attack Martin's character, instead of focusing on whether Zimmerman murdered Martin. Assistant prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda argued that Martin's past is irrelevant and would clearly be designed only to prejudice the jury.

The state filing the motion doesn't mean the defense was trying to use it at the trial and often similar motions are filed as a precaution to give the judge an opportunity to tell both sides what they should not reference or introduce unless later ruled relevant and admissible.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara also filed motions discussing what they will discuss at the next hearing, which is set for May 28. Among the motions were a motion to allow additional witnesses and to allow expert testimony by video at the hearing.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder after shooting and killing Martin in Sanford in February 2012.

May 13, 2013, Los Angeles:
.
One of the hardest hits I've ever seen during an MLB game results in a gash on the chin of Bryce Harper and 11 stitches to suit. Last night, I was enjoying the game, watching Zimmerman lead his team to victory in the fifth inning, with the Nationals leading 6-0 over the Dodgers. Then Harper literally hits the wall and seems to fall down almost in slow motion. He ran full-steam into the outfield wall, which is also a scoreboard, apparently not knowing how far into the warning track he had run. Of course, Harper, one of the toughest competitors in the sport, has the mentality of a hockey player and pleaded to manager Davey Johnson to be stitched up resume play. He cracks me up. GO NATS!
.
The outcome of the impact left him with 11 stitches to his chin and bruises on his neck, shoulder, and abdomen.
.
The Nationals beat the Dodgers 6-2

Read a comment response to me earlier today: That Hezbollah ever killed American soldiers and civilians is only spouted by Zionists.

Hezbollah is a resistance movement dedicated to defending Lebanon and to supporting the right of return of Palestinians - who incidentally are mostly Sunni and Christian, not Shia like Hezbollah.

Delusions of grandeur from a terrorist supporter . historically inaccurate to the point of disbelief. I dont care about your fantasies, or of the pending equalisations of "America did this" or "America did that."

Hezbollah have committed attrocities, they are terrorists and at best oppression-fighters (because freedom-fighter would assume they fight for freedom, rather than as clearly stated a religious theocracy).

Hezbollah has hijacked planes, they have kidnapped israelis and americans, they have been responsible for a number of suicide attacks.

But the comment clearly states that they never hurt a hair of an American. How is this possible when if hezbollah was responsible for the two explosions in Beirut on October 23, 1983 that killed 241 American Marines and 56 French servicemen sleeping in their barracks. Can't pull the wool over the eyes of any man or woman with access to google.

George Zimmerman: Why did he suddenly abandon 'stand your ground' hearing?

By Patrik Jonsson, Staff Writer /
						March 5, 2013
George Zimmerman, the
defendant in the Trayvon Martin murder case, was widely expected to
claim immunity under Florida's 'stand your ground' law. The defense's
calculations have changed.

The Trayvon Martin case may have brought renewed focus on new "stand
your ground" self-defense laws around the country, but the defendant in
the case, George Zimmerman, said Tuesday he may not use the law in his
own defense after all.

In a move that bewildered prosecutors, defense attorney Mark O'Mara
cancelled an April 20 "stand your ground hearing," claiming a time
crunch in preparing for a June 10 jury trial in the second-degree murder
case. If able to provide clear and convincing evidence of legally
standing one's ground against an attack, a defendant in Florida walks
free and is granted immunity from civil liabilities.Police
released Mr. Zimmerman without charges after the volunteer neighborhood
watchman shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin just over a year ago. Sanford,
Fla., police cited Florida's landmark 2005 "stand your ground law,"
which nullifies any imperative for a potential crime victim to try to
escape or retreat before using deadly force against an attackerZimmerman says he thought Trayvon looked suspicious, and that the two
fought after he approached the boy. Zimmerman says he didn't know
Trayvon was a child.According to Zimmerman, Trayvon knocked him
to the ground, straddled him, knocked his head against the pavement, and
punched him wildly to a point where Zimmerman feared for his life. Then
Zimmerman pulled out a pistol and shot Trayvon square in the chest,
killing him.Forty days later, after nationwide protests, a
special prosecutor arrested and charged Zimmerman with second-degree
murder, saying he illegally confronted an unarmed child for no reason,
provoked a confrontation, then killed the boy without cause.

	The
case gained nationwide notoriety because of suspicions of institutional
police biases against blacks, especially young black men. It also
became a waypoint in a national debate about an ascendant US gun culture
that has led to the loosening of gun laws and to the expansion of "no
duty to retreat" self-defense laws that apply both to conduct in the
home as well as in public areas like sidewalks and parks. Some
legal experts following the case, however, were not surprised at the
defense's decision to forego a "stand your ground" hearing, given normal
legal maneuvering in a high-profile murder case. One argument
goes that Zimmerman's ultimate claim may not be "stand your ground" at
all, since he technically was on the ground and unable to retreat any
further at the moment he shot Trayvon. In that scenario, he could claim
self-defense under pre-"stand your ground" laws.A more likely
scenario, says University of Florida law professor Bob Dekle, is that
Mr. O'Mara doesn't want to go through a bench mini-trial and possibly
tip off the prosecution about its strategy should the "stand your
ground" plea fail."If you're not 100 percent sure you're going to
win the 'stand your ground' hearing, you just end up telling the state
what your defense is and you've got nothing with which to surprise the
state at trial," says Professor Dekle. "What you want to do at trial is
catch the state with their britches down."Several new
developments suggest that Zimmerman's defense attorneys are having some
success finding information that could raise doubts among jurors about
the state's version of events. For one, the defense has been digging
furiously, with the judge's permission, into Trayvon's social media
history, which may present a more complex, edgier picture of the youth. Also
on Tuesday, a key witness for the prosecution was caught in a second
apparent lie amid probing by the defense. A woman who says she was on
the phone with Trayvon as Zimmerman pursued him originally gave her age
as 16, though she was really 18. And she also said she missed Trayvon's
funeral because of a hospital stay, which wasn't true.Prosecutors
were put in the awkward position of having to explain that situation as
reporters asked questions about whether they would charge the woman
with perjury, as prosecutors did Zimmerman's wife, Shellie Zimmerman,
after she allegedly lied about the couple's finances during a bond
hearing last year.

Florida police sergeant fired for having Trayvon Martin shooting targets

A Florida police sergeant was fired for possessing several so-called Trayvon Martin shooting targets, authorities said Saturday.

Sgt. Ron King of Port Canaveral Police Department was fired Friday after an internal review investigated how he offered the hoodie paper shooting targets to two fellow officers, said John Walsh, interim CEO of the Canaveral Port Authority.

The officers, who saw King with the targets in his police vehicle, declined the offer, Walsh said.

"Port Canaveral Police Department considers that behavior unacceptable," Walsh said of King's conduct.

King couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

In February 2012, Martin, 17, was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida, by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain who is awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge in Martin's death.

Martin family attorney Ben Crump condemned the use of the targets.

"It is absolutely reprehensible that a high-ranking member of the Port Canaveral Police, sworn to protect and serve Floridians, would use the image of a dead child as target practice," Crump said in a statement. "Such a deliberate and depraved indifference to this grieving family is unacceptable."

Walsh said the Canaveral Port Authority plans to apologize to the Martin family.

King brought two of the targets to a firearms training session on April 4 at the Brevard Community College campus in Cocoa, Florida, CNN affiliate WFTV reported.

King, who bought the targets on the Internet, and other officers at the training site were on duty at the time, the affiliate said. Port officials said King had been employed at the police department since January 2011, the affiliate said.

The parents of Trayvon Martin entered the room to a standing ovation.

The waves of applause marked the bittersweet beginning of the inaugural "We
Remember Trayvon" dinner, held in honor of the 17-year-old who was
killed last Feb. 26. The Feb. 10 event was a fundraiser for the Justice
for Trayvon Martin Foundation, launched by his parents.Sabrina Fulton,Saint Trayvon's mother, talked about why the foundation had become her mission.

"I asked God, 'why me?' " Fulton said. "God replied, 'why not you?' I knew that I had a job to do through all of this."

This unwanted job began a year ago when Fulton's son was shot in the chest
by George Zimmerman, a Sanford neighborhood watch member.

Saint Trayvon was visiting his father, Tracy Martin, who lived in the townhouse community
with his girlfriend.

The family's plea for an arrest brought national attention including marches in Sanford and cities across the country.

Zimmerman would later claim self-defense, citing the "Stand
Your Ground" law. A hearing on this defense is scheduled for April.Through
the foundation, the family says it will rally against violent crimes
involving young people, launch campaigns to support this cause and
advocate for civil rights. The Justice for Trayvon Martin Foundation is
raising money under the auspices of the Miami Foundation.

More than 250 guests came to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport
& Convention Center to show their support for the foundation,
including many of Trayvon's family and friends as well Oscar and Grammy
winner Jamie Foxx, comedian Cedric the Entertainer and radio show host
Michael Baisden. Foxx even sang Happy Birthday to the Miami
Gardens teenager, who would have turned 18 years old two weeks ago.

Foxx also offered his thoughts about controversial "Stand Your Ground" law."We
don't want to put the law in anybody's hand. We have police officers
for that," Foxx said. "So to have that type of law is kind of
irresponsible. This can happen to anybody, of any color, of any race."Local
politicians who attended include Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Miami
Dade School Board members Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall and Wilbert "Tee"
Holloway, and former Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson. The event
marked the conclusion of a weekend celebrating the life of Trayvon. It
began with the "I Am Trayvon" remembrance peace walk held at Ives
Estates Park in North Miami-Dade on Feb. 9.Civil Rights activists
Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, who were among the leaders who led the
national cause, were honored during the Sunday dinner.

Neither was able to attend because of a blizzard along the East Coast. Syndicated
columnist and television commentator Roland Martin hosted the
semi-formal event.Cedric the Entertainer told the crowd that he will stand with the family in their fight for justice.

"We are here locally to help keep that fire burning with the people," the
comedian said. "We were all fired up about it when it first happened; we
want that energy, that same zest.''

girlfriend, known as Witness 8 in court proceedings, is considered to be a key witness in the case because she alleges she was on the phone with Martin before he was killed. In a recorded interview with the attorney for Martin's parents last March, the girl claimed Martin said during that conversation that someone was following him. She said she heard a brief exchange between him and someone before the phone was cut off. Martin was shot shortly afterwards.

The girl had previously said in a sworn statement that she was unable to attend Martin's funeral because she had been hospitalized, but it was revealed in court Tuesday she had "lied" about the visit. "She, in fact, did not go to the hospital as she stated under oath," defense attorney Don West said, according to MyFoxOrlando.com. "And that Mr. Guy represented there would not be hospital records confirming her sworn statement, because, in fact, she lied." Guy confirmed there were no hospital records for Witness 8.

Many casualties in Texas Waco fertiliser plant blast

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22195495
Scores of people are injured and an unknown number feared dead after a huge explosion at a fertiliser plant near Waco in the US state of Texas.

Dozens of homes and buildings have been destroyed, and several are still on fire, after the West Fertilizer plant exploded at about 19:50 (00:50 GMT).

Some people are thought still to be trapped in buildings and a number of firefighters are reported missing.

An official confirmed there were deaths, but could not give a figure.

Continue reading the main story"Dean Wilson, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told a news conference that they were still conducting house-to-house searches.

He said the fire was still smouldering and that no firefighters were tackling it as there was the risk of further explosions.

Half the town had been evacuated, he added.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reported that firefighters had been trying to put out a fire at the plant when the explosion happened, and that some were among those injured.

The blast happened in West, a town of about 2,700 people some 20 miles (32km) north of Waco.

TV images showed streams of emergency vehicles descending on the site and ambulance crews using a nearby sports field as an emergency treatment area.

Glenn A Robinson, chief executive of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, told CNN that his hospital had received 66 injured people including 38 who were seriously hurt.

He said the hospital was seeing "everything from orthopaedic injuries to patients that are experiencing serious blood loss".

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said: "It's a lot of devastation. I've never seen anything like this. It looks like a war zone with all the debris."

Local emergency workers were mobilised to the scene

Unconfirmed reports said a nursing home had collapsed in the explosion and some people were believed trapped inside.

Witness Debby Marak told the Associated Press news agency that she had seen smoke coming from the area near the plant and had driven over to see what was happening.

She said that when she arrived, two boys ran towards her screaming that the authorities had told them to leave because the fertiliser plant was going to explode.

The massive blast was heard from miles aroundShe said she drove a short distance before the blast happened.

"It was like being in a tornado," she said. "Stuff was flying everywhere. It blew out my windshield. It was like the whole earth shook."

Another resident told KWTX-TV that she heard several explosions from 13 miles (20km) away.

"It sounded like three bombs going off very close to us,'' said Lydia Zimmerman.

The air in town was still covered in acrid smoke more than two hours after the explosion.

The area around the site was littered with shards of wood, bricks and glass.

Texas Governor Rick Perry said in a statement: "We are monitoring developments and gathering information as details continue to emerge about this incident.

"We have also mobilised state resources to help local authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of West, and the first responders on the scene."

An explosion Wednesday night at a fertilizer plant near Waco sent flames shooting high into the night sky, leaving the factory a smoldering ruin, causing major damage at nearby buildings and injuring numerous people.

The blast at the plant in West, a community north of Waco, happened shortly before 8 p.m. and could be heard as far away as Waxahachie, 45 miles to the north.

Several fires continued to burn in West two hours after the blast. In aerial footage from Dallas' NBC affiliate, WDFW, dozens of emergency vehicles could be seen amassed at the scene. Entry into West was slow-going, as the roads were jammed with emergency vehicles rushing in to help out.

Authorities set up a staging area on the local high school's football field, which was lit up with floodlights. Ambulances and several dozen injured people could be seen being taken away or seated in wheelchairs as they are treated and await transport.

Department of Public Safety troopers were using their squad cars to transport those injured by the blast and fire at the plant in West, a community north of Waco, Gayle Scarbrough, a spokeswoman for the department's Waco office, told television station KWTX. She said six helicopters were also en route to help out.

The explosion at West Fertilizer was reported shortly before 8 p.m. in a frantic call from the scene, KWTX reported.

A West Fire Department dispatcher told The Associated Press that any casualties would be transported to hospitals in Waco, which is about 90 miles north of Austin.

The explosion knocked out power to many area customers and could be heard and felt for miles around.

Brad Smith, who lives 45 miles north of West in Waxahachie, told the station that he and his wife heard what sounded like a thunderclap.

Lydia Zimmerman, told KWTX that she, her husband and daughter were in their garden in Bynum, 13 miles from West, when they heard multiple blasts.

Police officer fired for offering fellow cops Trayvon Martin target for shooting practice

By Susan Jacobson , Orlando Sentinel10:54 p.m. EDT, April 13, 2013

A Port Canaveral police sergeant was fired Friday after an internal investigation showed he offered other officers a target resembling Trayvon Martin to use for shooting practice.

Sgt. Ron King, a two-year veteran of the force of about 35 sworn officers, offered the target of a hoodie-wearing Trayvon at the range near Cocoa on April 4, Rosalind Harvey, a port spokeswoman, said Saturday.

The other officers, who were on duty, refused.

King led firearms classes at the range, Harvey said. On his LinkedIn page, he describes himself as night-shift watch commander for the Port Canaveral Police Department and a firearms and personal-safety consultant.

Port Canaveral Interim Chief Executive Officer John Walsh apologized publicly to Trayvon's family Saturday and called King's behavior unacceptable, insensitive and unprofessional.

"Whether his act is one of hatred or stupidity, neither one is tolerable," Walsh said.

The 17-year-old South Florida youth was shot by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman on Feb. 26, 2012 in Zimmerman's gated Sanford town-house community.

Zimmerman wasn't arrested until an international outcry resulted in the appointment of a special prosecutor and a second-degree murder charge against Zimmerman. He awaits trial.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney representing Trayvon's parents, issued a statement condemning the target.

"Using a dead child's image as target practice is reprehensible," Crump said.

The Trayvon targets, which feature a bull's eye over his heart, a package of Skittles in his pocket and a beverage can in his right hand, are sold online.

The night he was killed, Trayvon was on the way back to a relative's home from a convenience store, where he had bought the candy and a nonalcoholic drink.

King has a week to appeal his termination.

Before joining the Port Canaveral force, King worked as a Melbourne police officer for nearly 22 years. He was a lieutenant when he left in November 2006, according to LinkedIn. He worked as a manufacturer's representative for Point Blank Solutions from December 2006 until May 2010, his profile states.
