A Louisiana man who was recently arrested for pulling up next to female motorists and allegedly masturbating died early Monday when the car he was driving slammed into a metal utility pole in Desire, police said.

Lance Williams, 32, was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry west on Almonaster Avenue about 1 a.m. when he went off the road at Higgins Boulevard and hit the pole, said officer Hilal Williams, a New Orleans Police Department spokeswoman. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators think speed was a factor in the crash, police said. The Orleans Parish coroner's office will conduct an autopsy and toxicology tests.

Just a week ago, Williams was arrested for allegedly pulling up next to unsuspecting women while driving a green Ford Expedition and allegedly masturbating, mostly while stopped in traffic in Metairie.

He was booked with three counts of obscenity for complaints dating as far back as April 2010. He was re-arrested and booked with another count of obscenity the next day, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

In 2007, Williams was convicted of obscenity in Jefferson Parish District Court for exposing himself to a woman in while driving on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. A traffic stop that resulted from that complaint also got Williams in trouble in New Orleans. A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy found electronics in Williams' SUV that were stolen during a burglary in Lakeview. Williams in 2008 pleaded guilty to seven counts of burglary he faced in Orleans Parish. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison, according to court records.

Williams' most recent arrest stemmed from an alleged incident near the intersection of Bonnabel Boulevard and Veterans, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said. A woman said she saw a green sport-utility vehicle pull up next to her and saw a man stroking himself inside the vehicle.

The woman sped away, but the SUV followed her. She eventually got behind it and took down the license plate number and passed it on to sheriff's deputies.

Williams was released on Wednesday from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna after he posted a $30,000 bond.

Fatality investigator Michael Baldassaro is leading the New Orleans fatality investigation.
