A chase with police in Fort Worth ended with a kidnapping and murder suspect driving his vehicle head on into an officer's SUV that was stopped on the side of the road.
The incident was captured on video from the Fort Worth Police Department's helicopter over the weekend.
The suspect, Stanley Wayne Robertson, was driving on Highway 287 when he made a U-turn, passing several cruisers that were following him. That was when he drove into the officer's SUV.
Prior to the crash, the early Saturday morning chase went through downtown Fort Worth, up and down city streets. When the chase, involving nearly a half dozen Fort Worth police vehicles, went onto the highway, speeds were less than 50 mph.
It was when police put out stop sticks that the suspect accelerated and made a U-turn that could have been deadly. The officers in pursuit pulled to the side of the road to avoid Robertson's stolen car. He flew by several patrol cars, and then appeared to accelerate and take dead aim at an SUV carrying Officer Kerry Gober inside.
Debris scattered across the highway and another officer pulled Gober from the wreckage. Seconds later, the helicopter flew above as police surround the suspect's car, smashed the windows and made the arrest.
Fort Worth police booked Robertson for DWI and evading arrest, but he also faces a more serious charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
"I can't tell what he was thinking at the time," Sgt. Pedro Criado, Fort Worth Police Department. "However, by viewing the video, you can tell the suspect vehicle went directly at the officer that was pulled over to the side on the shoulder."
College Station police are handling the kidnapping and murder charges, even though Annie Mae Toliver was found dead in a Fort Worth parking lot.
Court papers say Robertson just got out of jail two weeks ago for strangling and threatening Toliver's daughter with a knife.
While Robertson remains in the hospital, Officer Gober was released from the hospital on Sunday. He's recovering at home.
