Safe Mode: On
Gorbachev to form Pro Democratic political party in Russia

A Russian billionaire said Tuesday he is teaming up with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to form a new political party that will challenge the country's recent steps away from democracy.

Alexander Lebedev, a former lawmaker who has built a fortune in business and investment, said he and Gorbachev would work together in a political movement tentatively named the Independent Democratic Party.

Gorbachev could not immediately be reached for comment and it wasn't clear ifthe 77-year-old planned to seek an active political role more than 17 years after the Soviet Union collapsed around him, costing him his job as its last leader.

It would be an uphill battle: Gorbachev is popular abroad, but is reviled by many Russians who blame him for the Soviet breakup.

Gorbachev won less than 1 percent of the votes in the 1996 presidential election and has not run since.

In a statement on his Web site, Lebedev said the new party was Gorbachev's idea. "The initiative belongs to President Gorbachev.

He gave our people freedom, but we have not learned how to use it."

Lebedev said the party would advocate a stronger parliament, independent courts and media, and a smaller state role in the economy.

Gorbachev has generally praised Putin for lifting the nation out of the post-Soviet troubles that many Russians blame on the late Boris Yeltsin, a longtime rival of Gorbachev who replaced him in the Kremlin.

But he has cautiously criticized some aspects of the political system put in place by Putin.

The United Russia party of the immensely popular Putin dominates parliament and regional governments while Kremlin critics have not enjoyed much popularity.

Earlier this year, Gorbachev suggested that United Russia was in danger of becoming like the all-powerful Soviet-era Communist Party and called for major changes in the electoral system.

Lebedev, a major private shareholder in the Russian airline Aeroflot, joined with Gorbachev in 2006 to buy 49 percent of Novaya Gazeta, an independent newspaper that has challenged the Kremlin with penetrating investigative reporting. Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent investigative reporter murdered that year, worked for Novaya Gazeta.

In a federal investigation of the murder, authorities stated that they had determined the identity of the killers, but have not yet made the names public.

In June, Gorbachev and Lebedev urged the creation of a national museum and memorial to honor victims of Soviet-era repression.

That's actually where I got my name from. Right when Ogrish switched to LL, I was taking Chemistry and was right at the time that Spy was poisoned, it was Thallium 213 that they first suspected.

    • Maybe if enough public light is kept on the scene, they won't be able to so easily assassinate the competition, especially someone internationally recognized as Gorbachev

    • Gorbechev might be the only guy in Russia to match Putin in political sway, this is just another veil for the Russian big brother though.

  • By the way Gorbachev is one of the most incompetent leaders SU/Russia has ever seen. He was behind the disastrous Perestroika that nearly destroyed Russia. We're still digging out of the rabble thanks to him. But hey, no matter who you are, just call your party 'Democratic [insert a catchy slogan here]' and the dummies in America will fall over themselves praising you.

  • That billionaire Lebedev guy better have paid plenty of taxes and then some, all his years in business.

A popular method of choice by Kremlin, to take out any political threat, is simply to find them in fault of insufficient taxation and simply arrest them and nationalize their assets.

I was always skeptical of Gorby regarding his motives and true objectives, like I am with all politicians... but you can't oppose the fundamentals of independent judiciary, strong legislature, encouraged ent More..

  • Americans should worry about their own government and not ours. Our leaders work for the interests of Russia but yours are all bought by the wall street crooks and thiefs. That's why despite the fact that 95% of American people are against the bailout, it just got approved by your congress. Suckers.

    • Dear communist bitchdog. You speak good english. Are you a spy? Russian leaders do what the Russian mafia tells them to do. It is obvious you are only told what the Russian government (mafia) wants you to hear so I will cut you some slack for being ignorant of actual events.

    • No you poor yokel, I'm not a spy; I'm just well educated. As for the Russian mafia, it's still very strong although it's been steadily loosing ground ever since Putin and his administration came to power. That's why most oligarchs are either in jails, Israel or obey the government. Unfortunately it looks like the crooks in your country just got away with one of the biggest scams in American history.

    • Just to give you an update on the news you have not heard. Putin is trying to destroy the democratic movement in Russia. He is doing away with the little freedom of the press you once had and filling your people with government propoganda. He has also renewed the "cold war" by invading a US allie (Georgia) and by sending war planes, war ships and nuclear bombers and submarines to play "war games" with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez who is an enemy of the USA. In addition he More..

    • You sound like a typical paranoid American conditioned by his government and corporate controlled media to hate Russia. I am free to go wherever I please and I've used that opportunity to travel to the US and get to know your country. Yet you, who I'm quite sure has never been anywhere close to Russia, presume that you can lecture me about my own country. Why not take a trip to Russia next summer instead of the Carribeans? You'll see that our government isn't the faux dictatorship as your me More..

    • Dude, we agree to disagree. But we can still communicate ideas. That is good. But let me tell you. Russian whores are advertised here for sale as wifes. Why? This makes you look like scum. Here I grew up taught to hate Russians like you were taught to hate america. Okay, but why? You drink vodka, I drink rum. So why not make friends rather than make a fight? Let's drink together and have a good time rather that fight. It makes no sense that we must be enemies. Why? Together we could do many thi More..

  • He'll be dead in 3 months. Polonium. Traffic accident. Food poisoning.

"Russian authorities attribite Gorbachev's death to a traffic accident brought on by food poisoning. Apparently his sardines were mixed with thorazine and polonium."

The revolution has gone full wheel.
