The Austin Police Department released dashcam video of a police officer who struck a motorcyclist with his patrol car.
Officer Damon Dunn had just completed a traffic stop near Scofield Ridge Parkway and Mopac on May 29.
According to the police report, Officer Dunn was putting notes in his computer when he realized he had rolled through a stop sign at the intersection of Magazine and Lamplight Village.
As he rolled through the stop sign, Dunn struck a motorcyle ridden by 74-year-old Louis Olivier.
Olivier was taken to Brackenridge where he remained in good condition Friday.
No disciplinary action was taken against Officer Dunn.
There is a law enforcement exemption that allows police to use mobile data units, such as computers, in their vehicles while driving.

Isn't that the same as "texting while driving"? which would normally result in a ticket?

It is, but they can txt while driving too. It sucks, I got a great picture of a Copper txting while driving, read up to turn it in and come to find out they're exempt from the law.

Hence, the exemption. See how that works? They go together... Officers are always going to have to be able to enter and access information on the fly. And, they're always going to tase rampaging idiots who do pcp and strip naked and start beating people up.

It must have sucked to have the wind taken out of your sails like that, eh? Thought you had the drop on the "Man", only to find out he wasn't doing anything wrong.

Nothing about "getting the drop on The Man", I harbor no grudges against the police, in fact a few on the force here are longtime family friends.

yup. that exemption shouldn't exist. the people should have the say whether to allow stupid exemptions and/or policies in some cases, this being one of them. it makes no sense to allow some to be "policy".

Because he doesn't answer to the people he runs over, he answers to the people who take tax money from the people who he runs over, the run over people in question HAVE to pay the taxes even if they get run over and as such cops don't feel obligated to avoid running people over (this is the problem with most public sector "EMPLOYEES")...
F*ck shitty cops, and sue the state when possible, if you ask me they owe you all the money you can rip out of their sweaty grabby hands.

I knew a lady who was hospitalized by a cop who ran a red light. He wasn't even responding to a call. He didn't get in any trouble and they actually fought her in court over the medical bills...

WTF? "No disciplinary action was taken against Officer Dunn." Why?
He still ran a stop sign and struck a person. It is still illegal to do those things not matter what you happen to be doing at the time! He could have been picking his nose and at the time, which is perfectly legal to do, but it doesn't matter. he fracked up and ran a stop sign. That is something people get tickets for.

That is the definition of what the exemption is yes. Can you understand why there might be exemptions in your town? Police officers can legally carry weapons in situations where you can't. Or should the exemptions be removed, and the police can just use what... Is there a weapon that you are allowed to carry down the street in your hands? I guess you believe they should be disarmed? They can wear big Bomb-Squad flack suits, and just try to use superior linguistics skills to persuade the terroris More..

""No disciplinary action was taken against Officer Dunn.""
So the Cops in America are legally above the Law?
So what I saw was a Cop rolling right through a stop sign, cause an accident that resulted in bodily injury, inattentive driving through texting, and they decide not to even give this guy a moving violation ticket?
Had this been anyone one of you people, you would be handing over two months worth of paychecks, and they wonder why people get upset with Cops?!
