Police hostage shootout/rescue caught on tape Nov 25/08

Raw video:San Mateo,California:November 25/08:An armed male suspect and a female victim are dead today following a standoff between the man and a SWAT team at a home in San Mateo.

The woman who lived at the home on Hobart Avenue was shot as she tried to flee from the armed intruder, and the SWAT team then shot the suspect to death, said Mike Callagy, deputy chief of the San Mateo Police Department.

"During the rescue the suspect opened fire (and) the officers returned fire," Callagy said. "The victim was also struck by gunfire, as we believe the suspect was firing at her."

It was not immediately clear how the woman was shot and who fired the bullet or bullets that struck her. She was transported to Stanford Hospital and pronounced dead this afternoon.

Police received a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. from a man who said there was a robbery in progress at his home on Hobart Avenue, just off El Camino Real. The man, who was not at home, said his wife and two young children were inside, according to Callagy.

A SWAT team set up a perimeter around the house and confirmed that there was a man inside with a handgun. The suspect at one point fired at the SWAT officers from inside the house, Callagy said.

During the incident, the woman was able to make contact with officers from a window..

Police urged the woman to escape through the window with her children. The children managed to escape but as the woman fled she was shot, Callagy said.

"Our officers successfully rescued the children," Callagy said. "We don't know who the suspect is. We don't know why he entered the residence with the gun, we don't know if it was a foiled home invasion or what kind of situation it was."

Alex Huber, who lives just across the street from the home where the standoff occurred, said he awoke this morning to the sound of gunfire. Huber, 19, tried to leave his home but was forced back inside by members of the SWAT team.

Huber said he heard about 10 to 20 shots and saw "SWAT team members everywhere and bullets on the ground."

  • They should always aim for the legs and then torture these motherfukkers to death in the public! I BET that would ACTUALLY work and make some FUKKING criminals think twice about the JOB vs CRIME dilemma! I can already hear the "Welcome to stone age!" comments in reaction to my comment. ;-)

  • Very bad about the women. For the gunman,SWAT saved the people a lot of money,No expensive trial,No expensive prison time, just a cheap hole dug in a potters field and his worthless ass thrown in. In these tough economic times, more worthless criminal trash will never see a trial.

  • Gotta love the last few seconds that shows a cop lying on the ground behind a wall and then another cop walking over to him as if nothing was going on. It's interesting how different people react differently.

  • Wow i work near by and the news reports were way off last night. It was reported that officers didn't fire until the children were out and that the woman had been shot by the assailant. Looks like she could have been caught in the cross fire. So sad. Also they don't know if the assailant died as a result of a self inflicted gun wound or by SWAT. Crazy shit.

  • Tragic. Perhaps if the woman would have armed herself she could have defended herself. Bad guys will have guns, good people must arm to counter this reality.
