A U.S. military helicopter crashed in northern Italy on Wednesday, killing five people on board and injuring five others, two Italian news agencies reported.

The Blackhawk helicopter went down in a rural area near the city of Treviso, which is close to the U.S. military base in Aviano and the city of Venice, the ANSA and Apcom news agencies said.

No further details were immediately available.

A spokesman at the U.S. Air Force base in Aviano told the Associated Press that the military was investigating the incident but could not confirm the reports.
