Skilled helicopter pilot frees snagged water bucket
Update :
Quote from eye witness :
"Thank goodness for all the amazingly brave and skilled emergency services workers who have helped keep us safe from the bushfire at Molesworth. Helicopters have been collecting water from our dam to bomb the fire just over the ridge to the west of us. The winds have been changing direction suddenly. The bucket of this chopper became caught in the canopy of a gum tree. Knowing there had been a helicopter crash 2 days prior whilst firefighting just up the hill we watched in with great concern. Amazingly the pilot was able to disentangle without mishap and resume his task. I am in awe!"

I can't help it think if he were a skilled pilot he wouldn't have gotten the damn thing stuck in the first place.

These guys are insanely talented pilots, the posters here who say he shouldn't have snagged the bucket in the first place have never flown in a situation like this. Most of these guys are ex-military and they love what they do.

@MrNice Screw ups and problems are inevitable when piloting anything.
What makes you talented is knowing how to handle those problems.

God that twangy Australian accent is annoying. The kiwi accent is much more pleasant to the ear.

@rugbybloke25 Nice of you to say so, but some of the female voices on NZ commercial and state radio would shatter glass at 60 paces! Some sound like finger nails scraped down a chalk board.

If he was so skilled he wouldn't have gotten it stuck in the first place. He is lucky not to have wrecked it.

Inattentive pilot got the bucket stuck. Have to be at your best all of the time while piloting - especially a helicopter.

OK. There seem to be a lot of people giving this pilot crap about the bucket caught in the first place. And yeah, I agree, it was a mistake.
But come on, he was in a high pressure situation and made a mistake ! Shit happens. Point is, he kept his head and worked the situation. From what I read about the story, just two days prior to this incident another chopper went down ! Maybe friends of his.
So maybe give him a break about getting stuck, and give him credit for doing a great job of More..

@Jersey_Devil That is not a high pressure situation... Thats called "fun" disguised as volunteer emergency services work. You're just happy somebody will pay for a UH-1H and let you fly it. I'd take that job in a heartbeat if I knew there wasn't already a line.

@jeru Would it be 'fun' if it was YOUR family and friends property and lives you where trying to save ?
Come on man, bush fires are NOT fun places to be. Especially when your friends and colleagues have died doing it !

@Jersey_Devil Yeah... being IN a bush fire is not a fun place to be. Seated at the controls to a magical flying machine OVER a bush fire... is another story. And its a *bush* fire, not a city fire.

@jeru You've completely missed the point of what I said.
I'll try again. Imagine it was your family, your home, your property and your lively hood. How much fun would be if they where relying on you to save it ?
The comment about it being a bush fire and not a city fire means what exactly ?
