FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A man shot and killed his sister, then committed suicide Wednesday afternoon at a popular beachfront Fort Lauderdale shopping center, according to Fort Lauderdale police. Juan Alicea Orozco, 23, and his sister, 25-year-old Jesnishia Alicea Orozco, were visiting their mother Wednesday afternoon at the Beach Place cigar stand where she works.
Their mother turned away from her children, and then she heard several gunshots, police said. When she looked back, she saw her son and daughter lying on the ground.
Several people witnessed the shooting, which occurred just outside a packed Hooters restaurant.
"He just leaned over … and shot two more shots into the girl," said witness Lori Podewell, a tourist from Illinois.
Both victims were taken to Broward General Medical Center where they died.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, although Fort Lauderdale police said the siblings were discussing money and living arrangements before the shooting.
"What drove the shooting to happen, we're still trying to determine that," said Sgt. Frank Sousa, of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
Police said surveillance cameras likely captured video of the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
