CCTV:Seattle July 26/09:Video surveillance of a man police say shot a Ballard convenience store clerk to death was released by Seattle police late Sunday afternoon. The video doesn't show the fatal shot and is stopped seconds before the suspect shot the clerk dead.
About 6:30 a.m., the man robbed the Pit Stop Express story and 76 gas station at 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 58th Street. The clerk and the robber got into an altercation and he was shot twice, police said.
The name of the victim, 28, has not official been released, pending notification of his family. Police said he was shot in the abdomen and thigh.
The suspect, who fled on foot, is believed to be in his 20s, 5-foot-10 and skinny. He was last seen wearing dark Burton snowboard cap with gold letters, a dark bandana with stars on it, sunglasses and a dark jacket.
Police, who could not determine his race, said he also had dark pants with a multi-colored pattern, black shoes with a white stripe and was carrying a black satchel. Police believe he is still armed and said the public should not approach the suspect if seen.
Homicide detectives would like to speak to two people, a man and woman, who entered the store during the robbery but immediately left.
"If they're out there and they're watching, do the right thing," police spokesman Det. Jeff Kappel said. "Please contact the Seattle police and tell us whatever you can.
The call initially was reported as a suspicious circumstances call after someone saw the man inside the store with a mask.
"The officers got there very quickly," Kappel said. "He was already gone, and very unfortunately … the victim had been shot."
The video released by police has sections of the full surveillance video slowed to show the suspect.
