'Green' lightbulbs poison workers

Hundreds of factory staff are being made ill by mercury used in bulbs destined for the West
Michael Sheridan, Foshan

WHEN British consumers are compelled to buy energy-efficient lightbulbs from 2012, they will save up to 5m tons of carbon dioxide a year from being pumped into the atmosphere. In China, however, a heavy environmental price is being paid for the production of “green” lightbulbs in cost-cutting factories.

Large numbers of Chinese workers have been poisoned by mercury, which forms part of the compact fluorescent lightbulbs. A surge in foreign demand, set off by a European Union directive making these bulbs compulsory within three years, has also led to the reopening of mercury mines that have ruined the environment.

  • This happens so often. An environmentally friendly alternative is just as, if not more harmful than the alternative. People should know by now that Mercury is bad stuff.

  • Why are we not concentrating on OLED's?... oh we are but its going to take another decade for them to be widely available.... should be just enough time for the investors in cfl's to get a good return. :)

  • Morale of story: don't buy chinese BS lightbulbs. They probably don't even last long enough to break even. Get the real stuff.

  • It's not just the workers at risk - every home with these rubbish 'green' bulbs is at risk.

  • LOL!!
Reason it's an issue is that commercial use of Merc bulbs pales in comparison to that of the average consumer replacing their little reading lite with an "environmentally friendly" replacement.

    AHAHAHHAhahahahaHAAHAHAHH!

Choke on it, you lying libtard scumbag..

  • lol @ 2012, I don't know anyone who isn't on low
energy bulbs already right now, and if you can't
afford them you will be given them free of charge.

TBH, I think some kind of L.E.D solution will
probably take over soon. (there are single LEDs
that give off over 1,000 lumen now) These CFLs
will then be dumped in everyone's recycle bins.

    =D

  • The electrical companies are subsidizing the cost of the bulbs.

  • The reason people are buying CFL's isnt becuase they want to save the ecosystem, its becuase its HELLA CHEAP.

    a 10W CFL can replace a 130v 75W candescent lightbulb. that's 80% cheaper on your lighting bill.

NEVER buy cheap CFL's. They dont last very long. Always buy GE or Philips, or another established brand name. I picked up 16 13w GE CFL's NIB on ebay for $22.00.

LED's are good, BUT theres alot of work left on them. They currently are still trying to improve the color spectrum for home use More..

  • Florescent bulbs have been around for years. Nobody made a big deal out of the mercury content in them until democrats started promoting the use of CFLs.
