Boaz Almog "levitates" a superconductor

How can a super-thin, three-inch disk levitate something 70,000 times its own weight? In a riveting, futuristic demonstration, Boaz Almog shows how a phenomenon known as quantum locking allows a superconductor disk to float over a magnetic rail -- completely frictionlessly and with zero energy loss.

    • @R3PLIC4N7D3CK4RD so if the bottom of the train was made of super conductors and you kept the superconductor super cold, and you could push start the train and shel never stop or slow down, or ever come off the tracks?

      Remember energy for energy will always have a loss.. at least our world for now.
      The temps. required to procure and maintain effect are currently prohibitive for any practical use.. this demonstration is an elementary and very dated use.
      Dated by the demonstrators own admission.

  • Very interesting stuff but currently impractical for any kind a modern day use.

    The energy required to keep a temp low enough to create this effect is greater than any purpose it could serve. (currently)

    Mag-lev trains for instance have got high-speed rail locked in for the foreseeable future.

    It's movement of electrical energy and maybe sooner than later, computers running with superconductors rather than semiconductors, exciting.
