Death toll rises to 27, 74 injured. Gasoline suspected on a diesel-fueled bus, arson a possibility
CHENGDU, China, June 8 (UPI) -- Gasoline, carried into the vehicle, might have caused a fire aboard a Chinese commuter bus, killing 27 people and injuring 74, an investigation showed.
The disaster occurred Friday aboard a city bus in Chengdu, capital of China's southwestern Sichuan province.
An official said an investigation revealed someone had carried gasoline onto the downtown-bound bus, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Several people including the driver of the bus and passengers told investigators they remembered smelling gasoline before the fire started, one investigator said.
He said some of the burned items from the gutted bus also were found to contain gasoline components, even though the bus itself was diesel-driven.
