We cant really be surprised now can we?
A senior British journalist claims that Syrian
rebels tried to lead him and his colleagues into a trap so they would be killed
by government forces, to discredit the regime of President Bashar
al-Assad.
Channel 4 News chief correspondent Alex
Thomson said a group from the Free Syrian Army led his team into the line of
fire because ‘dead journos are bad for Damascus’.
He said his vehicle was shot at before the
team managed to ‘floor it back to the road we’d been led in on’.
He wrote: ‘Suddenly four men in a black car
beckon us to follow. We move out behind. We are led another route. Led in fact,
straight into a free-fire zone. Told by the Free Syrian Army to follow a road
that was blocked off in the middle of no-man’s land.
'At that point there was the crack of a bullet
and one of the slower three-point turns I’ve experienced. We screamed off into
the nearest side-street for cover. Another dead-end. There was no option but to
drive back out on to the sniping ground and floor it back to the road we’d been
led in on.
‘Predictably the black car was there which had
led us to the trap. They roared off as soon as we re-appeared.
‘I’m quite clear the rebels deliberately set
us up to be shot by the Syrian army. Dead journos are bad for Damascus.’
His comments on the Channel 4 website came as
clashes were reported near the centre of the Syrian capital, while UN monitors
finally reached the hamlet of Mazraat al-Qubeir where up to 78 people, including
women and children, were reportedly killed by militia loyal to Assad two days earlier.

Assad is a better alley than Al Queda or the Lybian militias now causing terror in Lybia. He is also a good thorn in the side of the terrorist state it neighbours, Israel, which is good enough for me. Israel's enemy is my friend unless its the extremist scum aforementioned. Israel has been murdering civilians ten fold more than Assad and not a fucking whimper about it. The hypocrisy from the major governments is astounding.

Honestly, and I am not joking. So long as they're killing themselves, I don't care. If the occasional journalist, who CHOSE to be there in the middle of that shit, gets killed, boo fucking hoo.

Not surprised....bot sides are doing bad and evil things, but that's war, and sometime innocent people have to die for the greater cause....not saying that is the case here though.....

@Bthor420 I've seen no evidence of the governemnt doing bad things. Only claims. Everything they present as government bad things are suspect. Conveniently unclear and insufficient, but vaguely pointing in the directio nof men in uniforms, possibly of government affiliation. Of course they say it is the governemnt, what else? This event shows that they DO IN FACT fabricate stories and evidence and use trickery to promote a negative image of the government, because they want other people to come More..

I mostly agree with you!
But Hassad family is well known for hardcore repression in the past.
Pretty sure that there're a shit loads of war crimes in Syria!

Wait so they'd already been shot at before the black car turned up. I assume their driver was FSA already, why the need for the mysterious black car when they were already in danger, just drive up to a checkpoint and waved your arms around a lot, or hey, just shoot the fuckers yourself, both sides are generally using the same weapons.
The issue to me seems to be that assad's forces will unload on a nondescript vehicle carrying journalists (who are never shy about declaring themselves as such in More..

Good to see a Brit using logic. I'm afraid I wouldn't be surprised if the above account was pretty accurate. It is however, understandable. Thousands of civilians have died and the toll rises daily - the death of a U.N monitor or of a Western journalist could in an arse-about-tit way go towards stopping that.

Yeah it seems a life deemed valuable by the west has to be lost before any pragmatic action is taken.
It is painful to see Kofi Annan talk of slaughter, sectarian violence and civil war like it is a future prospect when the country has been in such a situation for more than 6 months.
The muddier the waters get, the harder they will be to get clear again.

@doriedd The rebels are underhanded terrorist types. They have countned from the beginning on foreign intervention to win the war so they need to discredit the government. This is exactly the kind of thing they would try to pull off.
As for the government shooting at the car. First of all, might as well have been an FSA sniper for all we know. Could have been one of their inside men i nthe Syrian army, in on the plan. Or simply, and most likely, they have the same policy as the US regarding cor More..

@xtr3mh4x0r They sacrifice people for their political goals. That is not "understandable". That is rotten. It just shows their true character, FINALLY someone in the media takes notice.

@doriedd It has already happened. That eyepatch lady was supposed to be a famous journalist. She died. Maybe they sacrificed her too. I mean, they do hang people for nto protesting. Why not murder lots of people and blame it on the government. Oh wait, they already did.
