Astroid shmastroid! Comets are the shit! Gotta watch out for those long period comets. One day you're walking around la-di-da, and then BAM!!! A comet comes out from behind the sun and turns the planet into a shapeless blob of liquid hot magma!

@mikedelta12 Not a bad way to go if you ask me. And it ties up all the loose ends. All of them.

Cool stuff. In looking at the orbital models, it looks like a ready made dumb waiter from Earth to Mars. It gets close to both regularly it seems.

it'd going to be close, but not that close, maybe next time around

Since most of us do not speak astronomical distance unit gibberish, I looked it up:
1 AU = ~150 million kilometers
1 LD = Lunar Distance = ~384,000 kilometers
So, for this asteroid, at a LD of 1.4, the distance from earth will be 537,600 km or 334,049 miles.
334,049 miles, in astronomy terms, is very close indeed. To make things more interesting, the Condition Code, or orbit uncertainty, for this rock is an 8 on a scale of 0-9, with 0 being good, and 9 being highly uncertain.
Good luck and More..

Too bad its not going to hit anything - I would LOVE to have read that it was going to hit or graze the moon or the earth--its time for some major shit to happen. we as humans need to be stepped on by nature-kinda like kicking an anthill--just would love to see it happen

@Jegsman Me too. Regardless of where it is. In the ocean; on my home; in the desert; arctic; rural or urban. I would like to see it happen too.

@ChaosClown: An asteroid strike could wipe-out a Continent, You would really want to see that?

@The A-Man How large of an asteroid would it take to "wipe-out a Continent"? And, yes, I would like to see it.

Gee, thank you for reading the article for me, saved me a bunch of trouble there.
What's the point?

@givinr That's what I thought. And it wasn't as if he put any laymens terms to use either. With LD, he could have at least explained what Lunar Distance measurements imply.

I get ALL of my asteroid predictions from MaKa - when he says they're going to miss, they ALWAYS do....so far
