Six Hour Standoff Ends With The Help Of Robot and Tear Gas

A six-hour standoff that shut down the two busiest freeways in Milwaukee, Wis., Friday morning ended with a couple in police custody after a bomb squad was called in to deploy tear gas into their vehicle.

The two outlaws, a 42-year-old-man with long criminal past and his 35-year-old alleged girlfriend, had taken off early Friday morning in a stolen SUV and remained holed up inside for nearly six hours after authorities closed in, Milwaukee Sheriff David A. Clark Jr. told reporters Friday afternoon.

Police had pulled over the vehicle, which had its hazard lights blinking, around 4:00am local time. The driver told the officer the car was running out of gas. But the SUV was discovered to be stolen and the occupants refused to leave the car.

Clark said the suspect displayed a firearm magazine of an unspecified caliber and made threats to officers. Police later found that there were no guns in the car.
