Great Dane "Giant George" declared Tallest Dog Ever

Tucson, Arizona - February 23, 2010

Ever since the standing record-holder for the Guinness Book of World Records "World's Tallest Dog" -- Gibson, a Great Dane in California -- passed away, Tucsonan David Nasser has been trying to get his dog George recognized as the tallest dog in the world.

In November, another California Great Dane named Titan was given the title as Gibson's successor, after Nasser apparently was unable to qualify due to problems with measurement and paperwork. Nasser and a team of George's fans have since waged a publicity campaign, trying to get the Tucson dog named as the true tallest dog.

Yesterday that effort was rewarded as the Guinness organization announced that they have named George the World's Tallest Dog, and also gave him the title of Tallest Dog Ever. Guinness officials certified George at 43 inches tall, beating out Titan's officially recorded height of 42.25 inches.

Giant George and his owner made an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show on February 22nd, and George even has his own website. According to the site, George was born on November 17, 2005, weighs about 245 lbs., and sleeps by himself on a queen bed. Nasser got George as a 7-week-old puppy.
