At least 26 LTTE terrorists were killed and over 30 injured in yesterday's (March 27) fighting ensued with Sri Lankan security forces in the eastern fringes of Puthukkudiyirippu and Karaiyamullivaikal, military s More..ources reported.
Successive attempts made by LTTE to engage concentrated assaults at the military forward defences North of Iranapalai and East of Puthukudiyirippu were comprehensively neutralized battlefront sources reported adding that sporadic fighting and small scale door-to-door operations are continuing in the area targeting enemy pockets and resistance positions.
Despite its successive set backs at the Mullaittivu battlefront LTTE is continuing shelling artillery barrages and mortar from the government declared No Fire Zone, which has also increased the number of injuries among those civilians fleeing from LTTE hostage, security sources said.
Meanwhile, ground sources, quoting intercepted LTTE communication and civilian escapees from the No Fire Zone said, LTTE had conducted funerals for a few of its senior cadres killed in the battlefront in recently fighting.
In general area Puthukkudiyirippu and Karaiyamullivaikal, 5 VIR and 7GW troops of the 53 Division advanced into enemy territory reportedly killing 11 terrorists while injuring 19 others, security sources said. During subsequent search operations conducted in the area troops have uncovered 3 LTTE bodies, 2 T-56 assault riffles, 1 I-com set and 2 hand grenades, the sources further said. According to reports, Task Force -8 troops have seized control over an LTTE built earth bund cum ditch in the area following fierce gunfire exchange with LTTE on Friday.
57 Division troops engaged in active defence operations in general area West of Puthukkudiyirippu, have found 3 decomposed terrorist bodies along with 2 T-56 assault riffles and an LTTE boat, military sources said. Separately, troops also uncovered 3 T-56 assault riffles, 1x 60mm mortar gun base plate, 1x I-com radio set and 4 x hand grenades.
Meanwhile, 12 terrorists were confirmed killed and 15 others seriously injured following intense fighting between 58 Div troops and LTTE terrorists North of Iranapalai yesterday, military sources said citing intercepted LTTE communication.
