Investigation Concludes Diving Mules Not Treated Cruelly

A videotape of mules "diving" last Saturday into a 6-foot-deep pool at a Pipe Creek dude ranch was among the evidence forwarded this week to Bandera County Attorney Kerry Schneider for review. A deputy who investigated the spectacle reported finding no evidence of animal cruelty.

Deputy Shane Merritt said no prodding was needed for the three miniature mules to scale a ramp leading to a platform 16 feet above the water at Lightning Ranch. The animals then stepped onto a sloped plank and made a splash. "I didn't think it was animal cruelty," said Merritt, noting the animals had performed the trick for years as part of a traveling road show before recently becoming weekly headliners at the ranch owned by Bill Rivers.

It still seems to me that one of these mules could flip and go tumbling or jumping off the side of the ramp.
