Metal band Metallica joins hunt for killer

Metallica is doing its part to help the FBI solve the murder of a 20-year-old college student after a 2009 concert by the rock band in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In a one-minute announcement on YouTube, Metallica frontman James Hetfield urges anyone who knows anything about what happened to Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington to contact authorities.

"Remember, any information, no matter how small you think it is, could be that crucial piece investigators need to help solve the case," Hetfield says in the video, with guitars and amplifiers in the background.

The band offered $10,000 in 2010 for information leading to an arrest in the case; the reward fund since has grown to $150,000, Hetfield says.

"This crime we feel was horrific in nature and what we want to do is bring closure to Morgan's family," Virginia State Police Capt. Timothy Lyon says in a video on the FBI's website. "We want an arrest,

and that's what we're committed to doing."

Morgan Harrington

The FBI says Harrington was last seen hitchhiking on a Charlottesville bridge after leaving the concert before it was over on October 17, 2009. Her body was found in a field four months later. She had been wearing a distinctive silver necklace with Swarovski crystals, which has not been recovered.

The FBI says DNA evidence links Harrington's case to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax, Virginia. The bureau issued an enhanced composite sketch of an unnamed man they think may be responsible.

The suspect is described as an African-American male with black hair and facial hair at the time of the 2005 attack. He is about 6 feet tall and was believed to be between 25 and 35 years old at the time of the attack, making him 32 to 42 now.

"If I had a son, he would look like the man on this sketch."

  • "..an african american male with black hair..."
So I can eliminate the 12 african-american males with blonde hair as suspects then?

    • @Opium "Justice for all" was the last good album in my opinion, then the media killed them by playing "Sandman" on the radio every 10 mins and then that album became mainstream on the billboard 200 and then the 9 Grammy Awards didn't help either, then it was official that they were sell outs.

  • Those pictures narrow things down to about 34 million black males currently prowling the United States for more victims.

I appreciate the bands efforts but don't see this one being solved any time soon.

  • I thought I knew a guy who looked like the picture and I tried calling the tip line but noone answered and there was no way to leave a message... Tried again same shit so I said fuck 'em.
She was supposedly drunk and possibly on drugs as well, because a man came forward saying as she was leaving the concert she was looking for random hookups and wandering semi-aimlessly(could be bs, but it definitely explains why she was targeted).

Sad that someone might actually get away with this.

  • Hope they find that douchebag but being there is only few odd million blacks in that state, let alone the country, I'm sure he'll end up sooner or later.

As for Metallica, cool they are acting donating money instead of complaining about not making enough (at least Lars did, anyway). I'm fan of their old stuff anyway back when Jason was with them. Now, don't know what happened. I guess becoming soccer dads changed their tunes, quite literally.

  • Since the feds do not have the killer's DNA on file as a link to identity, chances are nobody but the killer knows who did it. the only way they'll catch him is if he gets arrested for some other crime and they take DNA. Or he tells somebody.

    • @Hitler_Is_Amazing It was just as likely a group, or a person from a group who did it and the rest of the group knows who. The body was dumped behind a ranch near a stream/river that was accessable by ATVs and SUVs and people were known to have bonfires and dump a few miscilaneous items back there from time to time. Not a well known spot though until after her body was found by the owner of the ranch while he was checking his fence posts(kind of conveniently, I might add).

  • At least they are helping keep this case at the forefront of the news, whatever it takes to catch a murderer, I hope this leads down the road to a sound conviction and her family can have some measure to help close their wounds.
