Video of assault on NZ cop emerges

After a standoff between Kawhia
community constable Perry Griffin and Jackie Maikuku, the policeman is
knocked down and mobbed, new footage shows.

Two men charged over an alleged attack of a sole charge policeman at Kawhia have been further remanded without plea.

Jackie, 19, and Jack, 49, Maikuku both appeared in Te Awamutu
District Court this morning. Meanwhile, further footage of their alleged
assault on Constable Perry Griffin on January 11 has emerged.

Video footage last week showed Griffin pointing a Taser at Jackie Maikuku as he stood with his arms up by his side.

This new footage, aired by TV3 today, takes up where that footage stopped and shows Griffin on the retreat as a teenager advances towards him.

Griffin then takes aim with his Taser, but misses his target, with the Taser hitting the ground.

No warning was given before the Taser was fired.

After missing with the Taser, Griffin tries his pepper spray before running to avoid the man, and others, coming for him.

But he collided with a young man wearing a green singlet, falling to the ground.

A group then rush towards him, though it looks as though most are trying to pull a man off Griffin.

Volunteer firefighters then intervene, helping Griffin to his feet.
Griffin is seen to pull out his Glock pistol, but puts it back in his
holster after the items he loses during the fall are returned to him -
including his sunglasses, notebook and handcuffs. His Taser is said to
have been thrown in the water.

Today in court, Lawyer Kerry Burrows, appearing for Jackie Maikuku
and on behalf of Roger Laybourn for Jack Maikuku, said they were yet to
receive disclosure from police.

Burrows and police also opposed an in court application to photograph the pair in the dock.

Community
magistrate Kathryn Wilson remanded Jackie in custody without plea to
reappear on February 25 to deal with his outstanding charges.

The
pair - who both face charges of aggravated assault of police and
assault with intent to injure - will then both reappear for a post
committal conference on March 18.

She declined the media's photo application.
