This Fire is located in the Gila National Forest-Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, USA)Think Silver City NM). It is now the largest Wildland fire to ever impact the State of New Mexico. 1st video shot by hiker of the Fire burning in the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico from the top of
Grouse Mountain on May 17th, 2012. This fire is still burning at this
time (May 21st) and is now nearly 1,000 acres." When I got back to my car
the next day, there was a forest ranger there who told us they had just
sent in rangers on horseback to look for anyone still in the area."
The fire was caused by lightning according the the official Gila
Forest website http://www.fs.usda.gov/gila/
2nd Video is of a News Helicopter flyover broadcast of fire.
The fire is currently five percent contained and 190,262 acres.
Weather conditions are improving with higher humidity levels which will
reduce fire behavior and assist firefighters. The fire remains
active around and inside the fire. Burnout operations primarily around
the north and west flanks of the fire continue so firefighters can
create a larger fire break. Structure protection continues in Mogollon, Willow Creek, ranches and homes.
You may see columns of smoke as the fire hits timber on the western
edge. Weather conditions are improving with higher humidity levels which
will reduce active fire behavior. Some areas may experience
periods of air quality which are unhealthy for sensitive groups (those
with asthma, lung or heart disease, children, older adults and recent
science indicates pregnant women). Low lying areas close to ongoing fire
activity may experience periods with visibility of 1.5 - 2.5 miles,
which is indicative of air that is unhealthy for all groups. If heavy
smoke is present, then outdoor activities should be minimized where
possible and caution observed when driving in reduced visibility. For
