Here's a little clip of a special run I had in Niseko in Febuary 2014.
First I ski on the ridge trying to find a safe spot to ski... When I notice a large broken cornice. When I get closer you can actually see the cornice cracking under my skis. I try to break it and quite big piece actually falls off.
Then I skied a little further down to find a safer spot to drop in.
After a few turns I notice more cornice debris and a small avalanche probably triggered by skiers or a broken cornice.
I ski along the avalanche path only to find a pair of skis on the path. about 40-50 feet further down I noticed a group of digging with a ski.
And yes believe it or not, after 12 days of filming random boring stuff of my trip in Japan, at EXACTLY the moment I would have probably shot one of the most intense moment of my life... Memory FULL.
When I got there his friend had just located him using a ski pole as a probe. The incident happened about 20 minutes before. The victim was still completely buried when I got there. Luckily his head was the first thing we found. A couple minutes later his face was uncovered. His face was starting to turn really white almost blue... But the man was still alive! It took us another 15 minutes to completely dig him out.
Incredibly the 65 yo man was completely unharmed. He was a little shaken that's it. We were about 2km from the base of the mountain. Since the poor guy had lost his skis, I carried him back to his hotel on my back...
He dodged the bullet that day !
