The Duchess of York never stops bringing the UK monarchy into disrepute. The ex-wife of Prince Andrew and mother of royalty, she was kissing Saudi Crown Prince Nayef (an old fart over the age of 80) on the lips for money to pay off her debts. Off with his head? No, of course not, he was crown prince next in line to the throne.

As befits Britain’s warm relationship with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Duke of York and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond flew to Jeddah to pay their respects on the death of the country’s crown prince.


But their trip — they flew out in a chartered jet from Farnborough private airport and returned within 24 hours — has intrigued former friends of Prince Andrew’s ex-wife.


Indeed, it is being said that instead of Andrew, it should have been the Duchess of York making the visit, because she is thought to have known Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz rather better.

According to Fergie’s former personal assistant, Dr Allan Starkie, she gave Nayef the nickname ‘Rubber Lips’ after he planted a kiss on her lips over a candlelit dinner — and subsequently paid £50,000 into her account.

Former U.S. Army officer Starkie, recalls how, at a previous dinner, the Duchess had brazenly asked the prince to pay off her overdraft. At the time, her debt with Coutts was hovering just under £2 million. The bizarre story is detailed in Starkie’s book, Fergie, Her Secret Life, in which he wrote the prince was not flustered by the extraordinary request, merely saying: ‘Well I could consider doing that for a friend,’ before adding: ‘I would like you to prove to me that if I do this, you’ll never be in debt again.’


Fergie put together a business recovery plan and a second candlelit dinner was arranged with the prince in flowing robes. Writes Starkie: ‘Once his lips had closed on hers there was no getting away; but somehow in the end she managed to break free. Sarah expected either another invitation from her spurned would-be benefactor, or never to hear from him again.’


As it turned out, something quite different happened. In early December 1993, she discovered as she was checking through her bank statement that £50,000 had been deposited into her account.


‘She was,’ says Starkie, ‘excited at the thought of her £50,000 kiss.’


From New York, where he is now a recruitment consultant, Starkie who was in partnership with Fergie’s ex-lover John Bryan, tells me: ‘I wasn’t sure at first it was the prince who had died, but John has absolutely no doubt.‘
