They actually get him up and sit him on a stool while his eyes were rolling back in his head. RIP Gatti . Joey Gamache suffers from terrible migraines. He wants to be normal and happy, but sometimes, the pain is too much.
"I have thoughts of suicide," he says. "It's gotten that bad."
A former world champion in boxing, Gamache is still slim and boyish-looking at 43, and he is often recognized on the streets of Manhattan, where he now lives. Still, Gamache is reluctant to speak about his past.
In his last fight on Feb. 26, 2000, Gamache was brutally knocked out in two rounds by Arturo Gatti at Madison Square Garden.
The fight was marred with controversy when Gatti - who was found dead on Saturday at a seaside resort in Brazil; foul play is suspected - was allowed to enter the ring with what appeared to be a considerable weight advantage. Gamache was knocked down twice in the first round and rendered senseless in the second. When he woke up from the knockout, Gamache refused to be taken out on a stretcher(Bullshit) and nearly died in the hospital that night from severe head trauma.
Sixteen months later, another fighter, Beethavean Scottland, was killed in a bout that was also under the auspices of the New York State Athletic Commission. Those events, as well as several other scandals involving the commission, prompted investigations by the FBI, Office of the State Inspector General and the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Of Gatti's death, Gamache said: "I feel sad. He did a lot for boxing. People always thought that I should be mad at him for what he did, but I wasn't. He was a fighter and he did what he was supposed to do."
