Police responding to a call about an illegally parked 1997 Mercury Marquis say they discovered a mummified body in the passenger seat.

Costa Mesa police officers on the scene noticed a strong odor as they approached the car, and when they drew near, they saw a leg under pieces of clothing, according to the NBC Los Angeles.


Investigators said the driver of the car had befriended the woman at a local park and allowed her to sleep in the car overnight. When the woman discovered the woman died while inside, she continued to drive the car with the body at her side, said Sgt. Ed Everett.
Police believe the woman died between three and 10 months ago, and the driver of the vehicle was afraid to contact authorities. Police have also said that they found a box of baking soda, which may have been used to cover the smell of the body.

No foul play was suspected, police also said, after reviewing the results of an autopsy. DNA tests and a check of dental records will be needed before police say they will be able to identify the body.
