First, a muslimah describes a brutal beating at the hands of her husband and then, despite the fact the Quran allows a man to beat his wife (verse 4:34), she credits Allah with saving her life.

In the second part, her husband adamantly states that a man should never beat his wife, except in one case: when she deserves it by provoking him. He goes on to claim he has never "attacked" his wives, but describes how he just slaps them around when they need it.

Quran verse 4:34 below. Notice the woman doesn't have to actually do anything to deserve a beating. Her husband can beat her if he just suspects or "fears" she may do or has done something offensive.

"Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great"
