A 14-year-old boy was arrested in the rape and beating of a
woman outside the Hyatt Place Lakeland Center hotel, police said this
morning.
Corey Lee Sutton was charged with sexual battery with serious personal injury, attempted second-degree murder and robbery.


The victim was discovered about 11:10 p.m. Monday on the west side of
the hotel, at 525 W. Orange St. adjacent to The Lakeland Center arena,
police said.
The victim, a hotel employee, was choked until she was unconscious
before being sexually assaulted, said police, who called the attack
"particularly violent."
Sutton, who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds, had been reported missing since Friday by his mother, police said.


According to an arrest affidavit, Sutton entered the hotel's employee break area about 10:40 p.m, then approached the victim.


"He communicated about his original intent to rob the victim of her
purse, and how he attempted to choke her with both hands," a news
release from the Lakeland Police Department reads. "Additionally, he
admitted to continually beating her with his fist; and to the sexual
assault that followed."
The victim told police she was in the break area just outside a door
waiting for a friend to get off work. The attacker walked toward her and
said, "I'm sorry, excuse me," the woman told police. She said she put
her head down and was operating her cellphone when she was suddenly
attacked, police said.
According to the affidavit, the victim suffered fractures in her
facial bones, extensive cuts, bruises and lacerations. The attacker fled
with the victim's purse.
Sutton was seen on surveillance video before and after the attack,
and publicity of the video led his mother to contact law enforcement,
the affidavit said. The teen was interviewed Tuesday night by detectives
with his mother's permission, police said.
