The reverend of a St. Paul church says he needs to raise $200,000 to pay off a church loan after most of his followers left because of his support for gay marriage.
The Rev. Oliver White runs Grace Community United Church of Christ in St. Paul. The 69-year-old said he needs to raise the money by June 30.
“We lost our income when we lost a number of people from our congregation.” White said.
White said two-thirds of his followers left after he said he supported same-sex marriage, and said he was against the marriage amendment that will be up for a vote in November.
“I think people are scared — scared of change, and what has been in the closet is finally coming out, and too many people are not willing to accept it,” White said.
He argued they have to accept it, adding that it’s a civil rights issue.
“It’s time for our society to do as Rodney King did and say, ‘Can’t we all get along?’ That should be the 11th commandment as far as I’m concerned,” he said. “We should not try to legislate morality, in terms of who should get married and who can’t get married.”
White said they are praying for a miracle donation, but says even if they lose the church, those remaining members will find another place to worship.

@klark kent Why? Let the church fail. Religion is not only detrimental to homosexuals, but to societal advance.

It's not nearly as detrimental as liberalism.

@WolfBite120 Nothing is more detrimental than breeding those who spawn the 'follow without question' mentality. Religion allows assholes in power to abuse their power because the majority are too damn dumb to step up and bitch.

@Steve15425 Take out "religion" and put the word "Politics" in there and it is just as true.

@Steve15425 If the gay community wants to advance, they can either 1. bad mouth anyone who doesn't agree with them (that hasn't worked well) 2. see if a judge can toss the old law and give them what they want (that hasn't worked well) or 3. Make new friends and allies by returning the support that was given to them. Has to work better than 1 or 2.

If Christianity is based on the New Testament, and the New Testament doesn't condemn homosexuality, then why do Christians oppose it? If Christianity is based on the Old Testament, why don't Christians advocate stoning disobedient children to death, killing people for working on the Sabbath, killing adulterers, etc?

The problem with this is that the New Testament does offer some unequivocal statements condemning homosexuality. Pro-gay advocates have tried to reinterpret the contexts of these statements in their favor, but the text, including in the original Greek, plainly sets homosexual behavior alongside a list of other obviously negative behaviors.
And just because something is "based on" something else does not mean that it follows that other thing exactly. If we go on Jesus's More..

@buzzardist Christ (And God) said nothing about Homosexuality. Paul did, and being that Paul never met Christ? I tend to place very little value on Paul's words. The Book of Acts would seem to support this as the other Apostles were very set against both Paul's teachings and his desire to take those teachings in to Asia.
Gods Laws for us (10 Commandments) are not meant to be added to by all the other ritual requirements in Leviticus etc. Prohibitions against Mixed Fibers in cloth, Shell fish More..

The problem with what you say is that it does not match up very well with Jesus's words in the New Testament. We can debate how extensively the Levitical requirements were ever enforced in Hebrew society, but you have to deal with Jesus saying in Matthew 5:18 that not one jot or tittle would drop from the Law or Prophets. That's a pretty sweeping statement that includes a lot more than just the Ten Commandments.
You skip over, too, the fact that when Jesus rescued the More..

This is a curious story, especially for the pastor's remarks.
Obviously, the church should not be watering itself down merely to attract followers. Jesus certainly never did that, and the people in his own time killed him for it.
Whether or not gay marriage is an issue that is worth staking the church on, however, is another question, and I wonder how this pastor went about pushing support for gay marriage at his church, whether it was a unilateral decision on his part or a stance adopted by More..

Clearly you don't read the Bible or you would understand that God and Christ never once said a single word on the topic of Homosexuality. Promiscuity certainly. Adultery certainly.
But the Church recognized Gay Marriage right up to the seventeenth century.
The only reason this Pastor will lose his church is because he has fallen for the Rapture lies and God is now attempting to save him from being in the very long line of liars from behind the pulpits who w More..

I guess his "christian" followers decided to blow off everything he's been teaching them lately. So - where is this faith they always talk about? Apparantly they blew off the trust and faith of a man of god, and instead listened to fox news or some bigot at the pie shop. So much for being religious I guess. Maybe they can start a hate church. Maybe they can figure out how to stop straight parents from having gay babies. The church by my house has a sign which reads this week: "Yo More..

Arguably, they are doing precisely what the Bible teaches them to do. The Bible says that believers ought to test any teacher's words to see if they match with scripture. If not, then don't give heed to that teacher.
Blind faith would mean simply believing and doing whatever the pastor instructed from the pulpit. At least these people think for themselves.

Unfortunately, Reverend White seems to be in the wrong line of work. Pitching new ideas to people which you believe will help advance mankind is not for Church. Your flock just wants to hear how they burn in hell for sinning, and how their souls can be saved through unquestioning faith.

Marriage should be a religious issue, not a political one. I support their religious freedom as Christians to not approve of gay marriage but I do not support their efforts to make laws against it.
