There should be nothing surprising about birds falling from the sky and dying. They tend to all eat together, eat the same things, have a rapid (I really mean rapid) digestion so whatever is poisonous that they've eaten goes into them all at the same time and quickly. Those little things only have stomachs about 60 grams (about 2 oz).
