Too Much of a Good Thing
Why we need less democracy.

In an 1814 letter to John Taylor, John Adams wrote that “there never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” That may read today like an overstatement, but it is certainly true that our democracy finds itself facing a deep challenge: During my recent stint in the Obama administration as director of the Office of Management and Budget, it was clear to me that the country’s political polarization was growing worse—harming Washington’s ability to do the basic, necessary work of governing. If you need confirmation of this, look no further than the recent debt-limit debacle, which clearly showed that we are becoming two nations governed by a single Congress—and that paralyzing gridlock is the result.

So what to do? To solve the serious problems facing our country, we need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic.

3 strikes felon Michael Jihad pleads not guilty of trying to run Marines off road

SEATTLE – A Lynnwood man being held for allegedly trying to force a vehicle driven by two Marines off Interstate 5 in July pleaded not guilty in King County Superior Court Tuesday.

Michael D. McCright, aka Michael Jihad, is being held for a July 12 incident involving a government-owned car driven by USMC Staff Sgt. Ryan Picklesimer and USMC Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Lopez. McCright allegedly tried to drive his own car into the vehicle occupied by the two Marines.

In court Tuesday, attorneys for McCright requested that no photos of McCright's face or of him wearing a jail jumpsuit be published or shown. The judge denied the request to not show his face, but ruled that writing on McCright's jail jumpsuit shall not be shown.

McCright is also under investigation by the FBI for possible domestic terrorism.

In a court filing, prosecutors said McCright's cell phone was used on at least three occasions to contact one of two men accused of plotting a suicide bombing attack on the Military Entrance Processing Station on East Marginal Way, the same facility Picklesimer and Lopez were departing just before the July 12 incident occurred.

A federal criminal justice source said the FBI had McCright on their radar even before the July 12 road rage incident. Now he's part of an even broader terror investigation.

McCright has a long criminal history and is a three strikes candidate. Prosecutors have requested that McCright's bail be set at $2 million.

Prosecutors say McCright's phone was used to contact Abu khalid Abdul-Latif, who also went by Joseph Anthony Davis, 33, of Seattle. Abdul-Latif Walli Mujahidh, also known as Frederick Domingue, Jr., 32, of Los Angeles, were arrested on June 22 and face terrorism and firearms charges for the suspected bombing plot. McCright's calls to Abdul-Latif occurred prior to June 22.

Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh were arrested after nearly a month of surveillance and recordings by FBI, with the help of an informant recruited to join the plot. During that time, law enforcement say they learned Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh intended to shoot people enlisting in the armed forces at the Military Entrance Processing Station on East Marginal Way (MEPS).

"Driven by a violent, extreme ideology, these two young Americans are charged with plotting to murder men and women who were enlisting in the Armed Forces to serve and protect our country," said Todd Hinnen, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

But even that is not the Palestinians’ true intention. Take a look at the logo below from the official Palestinian mission to the United Nations. Look carefully at the green area in the center of the page—it includes ALL of Israel. The enemies of the Jewish state will never rest until Israel is destroyed. They may make promises of peace in exchange for some land now, but it is only a ploy to give them time to get what they truly want.


The Palestinians have announced that they have the support of eight members of the UN Security Council—only one short of the nine required for the measure to be approved. This news comes as a great disappointment to Israeli leaders who had lobbied heavily to keep Nigeria and Gabon from voting for the creation of a Palestinian state. My sources in Israel had expected those nations to at least abstain if not vote against the measure.

Though the US has promised to veto the measure if it passes, the fear is that such an action would unleash a torrent of terrorist activity against Israel…and possibly the United States as well. Bosnia and Herzgovina along with Columbia are the two remaining undecided members of the Security Council. If either of them chooses to vote for the resolution, a harvest of death and destruction will almost certainly result. Will you join me right now in urgent prayer for the peace of Jerusalem and the protection of Israel? Our support of God’s Chosen People has never been more important than it is right now.

Jesus said, “I was hungry and you fed Me ... what you do for the least of these you have done for Me.”

The Talmud describes this day as one of malchuyot, zichronot, shofrot—Sovereignty, Remembrance and Shofar. It was meant to be a reminder of the goodness of God to His people and the importance of righteous living.

This year the shofars are sounding over the Holy City facing an uncertain future. The world is working feverishly on its plan to divide Jerusalem and hand over control of much of the ancient city, including the holy places of Judaism and Christianity, to Israel’s bitter enemies. The UN Security Council has taken up the application for Palestinian statehood. The Quartet, comprised of the UN, EU, Russia, and the United States, is putting forward yet another plan aimed at drawing concessions from Israel in the name of peace. The Jewish people need our help right now, and I’m asking you today to stand with me in standing for Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stood before the United Nations last Friday, holding in his hand an application for statehood. World leaders, foreign ministers, and ambassadors arrived an hour early to fill the empty seats in the auditorium. People were standing against the walls and sitting on the stairs. With all the hype and enthusiasm, one would think it was Lady Gaga or Madonna preparing for a performance.

As Abbas waved the copy of the petition he had earlier submitted to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, the hall repeatedly resounded with thunderous applause. One would have sworn it was Nelson Mandela fresh out of prison to proclaim an end to South African apartheid.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech delivered less than an hour after Abbas left the podium was brilliant and focused, but instead of enthusiastic applause, there were empty pockets in the hall where representatives of Arab countries had departed. The silence was deafening.

The question that remains is simple: What is next? The application was delivered to the Security Council which has five permanent members, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, and ten rotating members. The Council will delay a vote on the application while the Quartet (Russia, the UN, the EU, and the United States) attempts to use all possible global influence to pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu to concede to Palestinian demands.

A two-thirds majority or 129 votes is required by the General Assembly for the Palestinian Authority to be given observer status. The Security Council requires nine votes in order to pass the Palestinian petition for permanent status. Any one of the five permanent members who have veto power can stop the measure by voting against it.

What transpired at the United Nations was pure theater packaged in shuck and jive, shake and bake, and smoke and mirrors. President Obama spun his “plausible deniability” speech to attempt to convince Democratic and American Jewish voters that he was on the team. This was nothing more than a re-election ploy. At the same time, the husband of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, stated that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu “moved the goalposts upon taking power. It is the key reason there is no Palestinian peace deal.” These two played the “good cop-bad cop” game perfectly. Speaking of playing games, at the end of the week, both enjoyed a round of golf.

The Obama administration formula of “never miss the opportunity of a crisis” is working perfectly. The Middle East Quartet that has been working on a plan for years will have accomplished basically everything Abbas wants by the end of 2012. I outlined this in my book, Cursed, released in 2010.

Now the demonization and isolation of Israel will begin globally, as an invisible economic Stealth bomb will be launched to fragment Israel’s economy. With Israel’s former allies, Egypt and Turkey now in the anti-Semitic, Jew-hating camp and with the Arab League firmly behind the Palestinians (complements of the UN vote), billions of dollars in weapons from the Arab League and Iran will flow into the Palestinian territories. These weapons include anti-aircraft missiles.

The first phase of twenty-first century warfare begins with an economic bomb; the second phase is a media bomb—the battle for the mind; and the third phase is a proxy war. Look for the Palestinians to use HAMAS in Gaza as their proxy as a wave of unspeakable terror rolls over the state of Israel. Not only will the most sophisticated weapons be smuggled in, but additionally, WMDs will flow through Lebanon from a destabilized Syria—thanks to Hezbollah.

During the Persian Gulf War, the senior advisor to the prime minister and my mentor, Dr. Reuben Hecht, told me that Israeli intelligence had received notification that Saddam Hussein was going to put weapons of mass destruction into the missiles being fired from Iraq into Israel. Immediately, Prime Minister Shamir opened two nuclear silos and pointed the weapons at Baghdad. Saddam Hussein was informed that the moment one WMD landed inside Israel, Baghdad would cease to exist. Will it come to that again? I hope and pray not…but it is obvious that we must stand with Israel now more than ever.




"Mahmoud Abbas presented his demand for full statehood recognition at the United Nations today, just minutes after telling a crowd of Palestinian leaders and supporters, “We shall not recognize a Jewish state.” Full recognition requires a vote of the Security Council, where the US has said it will use a veto if necessary to keep the measure from passing. There are also reports of widespread violence in Palestinian towns and senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said, “States are not built on UN resolutions; states liberate their own land.”

The news media has presented a very slanted version of events, and I don’t want you to be deceived. President Obama’s threat to veto the Security Council recognition of a Palestinian state does NOT mean that the danger is over. Behind the scenes, the President is placing enormous pressure on my dear friend Prime Minister Netanyahu to make the concessions being demanded by the Palestinians. Mr. Obama is not backing down in any way from his support of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Many analysts believe that a political decision has been made with an eye toward the 2012 elections to have the President appear to support Israel in public while privately working to force the Jewish state to make impossible concessions in the name of peace. While a US veto in the Security Council would be better than full UN recognition of Palestine as an independent nation, this matter is far from resolved. The pressure being brought to bear on Israel to give in is incredible.

Today the crucifixion of Israel is being prepared. The enemies of the Jewish people are fully committed to their destruction. If they are not stopped, they will rip Israel apart. No one knows exactly what the Palestinians will do today…or what the UN will do in response. This is a critical and pivotal prophetic moment, and I ask that you join me in urgent prayer for Israel and the Chosen People today.
