Next time give the cameraman the rifle. He knew where the guy was the whole time.

Given that Gunny Hathcock seemed to get "lucky" 103 times in a row, and his opponents never got lucky even once, perhaps his was a bit more skill than luck.

@wharris I was going off what he said about this particular shot. I believe his words were something like "Luck would have it"

I have a lot of respect for the skill Carlos had, I know his record for longest kill shot has been beaten but look at the difference in technology between the shots.

Pure skill by Hathcock, no luck involved with him, complete professional, a legend within the Sniper community. The man not only had excellent shooting skills, yet his recon skills were amazing

Wow....pretty amazing story. Something right out of a movie. I wonder how long these two were at eachother's necks?

Image what he could do with an M107 and an H27 reticle (with palm computer). He could probably shoot down a satellite...
(slight exaggeration)

I seen on myth busters where I thought they said this shot was pretty much impossible due to the curve of the glass on the scope.they said the wrst that could happen would be glass in his eye and face, but not a bullet...

@Bthor420 They were wrong, as they stated in a later episode. Even if they didn't retract it, their "test" consisted of an amateur shooter, not a professional marksmen.

Ok. I wasn't sure, I just remember there being an episode on it, hence the reason I said "I thought" but thanks for the correct info!

@Bthor420 Mythbusters used a modern 12X scope for their first test which due to the sheer number of lenses shattered the round.
After their inbox got reamed for assuming that all scopes are the same, in a later episode they used the same smaller Soviet 4X scope used by the NVA sniper which confirmed the myth.
The whole Mythbusters thing was bullshit anyway as Hathcock went and checked the body himself, the only reason he lived was that he pulled the trigger milliseconds before the Cobra did.

Thanks for the info! I wasn't denying it, I just honestly thought they "busted" that myth...but I wasn't 100% sure
