MODESTO, Calif. —
(KCRA) A
registered sex offender released from prison on Monday was arrested
Tuesday after he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl on a Modesto city
bus, according to witnesses. Modesto
police officers were called downtown at 7:30 a.m. when there were
reports of a disturbance on a Modesto Area Express bus.
When
officers boarded the bus, they saw a group restraining Kevin Michael
Long, 37. Long was handcuffed by officers and taken into custody.He had just been released from Corcoran State Prison on Monday and paroled to Modesto.

Police said the
15-year-old victim was on her way to school when Long approached her on
the bus and made several sexual comments.
He
then lunged at her and began sexually assaulting her, witnesses said.
Passengers on the bus pulled Long away from the girl. Witnesses said the
four men who helped stop the assault are homeless and stay at the
Gospel Mission on Yosemite Street in Modesto."They are heroes," said Alfredo Rodriguez, who was on the bus at the time of the alleged attack.


"The
guy lunged and tried to grab the girl. One guy got him into a head lock
-- took him down. Then the other three guys then jumped on and held him
down," Rodriguez said.
Long had also spent the night at the shelter Monday night.


"We
were very fortunate in this case that several concerned citizens
immediately took action and stopped the ongoing assault," said Captain
Scott Heller. "Their actions not only aided in preventing further
assault on the victim, but also in the apprehension of this violent
predator."
