'Dodgers of D-Day' - Tommy Humour, British Version

"The D-Day Dodgers" was a song inspired by a remark allegedly made by
British MP Lady Astor, accusing the British and Commonwealth soldiers in
Italy of "Dodging" the invasion of Normandy and essentially of being
drunken and Venereal Disease ridden louts.
The original version of the
song was written by Scottish Highlander Captain Hamish Henderson and
sung to the tune of the internationally popular German foxhole song
"Lili Marlene".

  • Lady Astor said to Churchill, "If you were my husband, I'd poison your tea," to which he responded, "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it!"

  • Was not alive at this time, I guess her husband was in Paris with a sexy French girl, drinking wine and eating cheese. We are a small island who fought for nearly five years against a brutal regime so if a few guys decided to get drunk and party rather than pop their poop hole over a machine gun barrel, fair play to them.

  • Ok brits, i admit the Umbrella comment was a little over the top but
i standby the duckwalk in comparison to the landing at Omaha Beach.

The slaughter at Omaha was more a result of the US military doctrine of sending in the infantry wave without specialised tank support. The Brits and Canadians(having learned from the Dieppe Raid) made large use specialised armour hence the easier time. Go look up "hobart's funnies" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobart%27s_Funnies

  • The brits had a duckwalk on D-Day and the Americans knew it. We had to
face the fire while they walked ashore with umbrellas. Life is not fair
    sometimes.

    • @riddler11 An extraordinarily idiotic & disrespectful comment. An umbrella was surplus to my uncle's requirements, as he swam through corpse filled oil after his vessel was torpedoed. I'm sure the fact that he never fully recovered will delight you. http://tinyurl.com/d6pf5lk

    • @riddler11 The dumbest of dumb yanks...weened off Hollywood movies

The inexperience of the US troops and their unwillingness to get up and advance was a large reason for the casuallties at Omaha

    • @shashi2005 Read your history. Since the brits suffered horrific casualties in the war it was decided that the Americans would take the brunt of D-day invasion..hence my comment on duckwalk. i meant no disrespect to an unusual torpedo hit on that day.
