RickBond's Garden - Saucy Sexual Sagos
Please don't click on this if you don't like garden videos.
I'm gonna make a project out of this with my GF's little girls (10 & 11). Later, we're going to shake the male cone over the female and make fertile seeds that, I understand, are easy to germinate. If there's any interest in this I'll post a follow-up video in Fall, when the seeds are ready to be harvested.

Ha! I had a vegetable garden before Hurricane Katrina. It wasn't easy, since I have many, many critters who thought they should have their share before me. Also I get high salt water tides from time to time that the veggies don't like. Next year I'm gonna try to make a very high raised bed and fence it for veggies. For the time being, my GF has a veggie garden at her place that has our corn, tomatoes and Jalapenos growing.

We have queen palms growing in my community..... I cannot wait until they fruit! Each queen palm tree produces probably 1k hanging fruit...they look like kumquats but taste like a plum and mango hybrid. Those are def some mature and pricey secas you have in your yard... ever have problems with people stealing them?

@Muscledoctor
I googled Queen Palm, and they look nice to have; don't know if they'd grow here.
No problems with theft here. Not only are Sagos common (although these are large, mature ones) but no one can get on my property without my dogs knowing about it.

Google Queen Palm louisiana, and several forums pop up where people are growing 'em there.

Thanks Joe. I'll check it out. If they don't need good drainage and not too pricy I'll try to grow one. Palms are some of my favorite plants.

unusual looking plants, I was wondering if they are edible after the comment by muscledoctor. I checked it out and it turns out they are highly toxic, I expect you already knew that.

Yes, poisonous to people and animals. Each year at least one of my Sagos (I have dozens here) produces a cone and I cut them off and throw them away so my dogs don't get at them.

Nice plants. Here in Florida, Sagos and other members of Cycas are considered worthless due their susceptibility to the white cycad scale. Because of it, keeping healthy, mature specimens in the garden is increasingly difficult. I'm glad to see that you have a pair of healthy looking plants.

Thanks. Their value is so relative to where you live. When I lived in CA over 20 years ago a small Sago (like 1 gallon) would cost $50.00 I had one and it grew really well in San Jose.. They're quite common here and I have about a dozen in the ground and about 2 dozen in pots from the "pups" they make.

Hi T, thanks for commenting. I looked into bamboo a few years ago and planted a lot of it as a "natural fence" between me and my neighbor. You can see some of mine in the background of my last garden video.
There are so many types and you can easily find some that will grow in your area. Ask your nursery what does well. The most basic thing to know about bamboo is that there are basically two types: Clumping and Running. Running Bamboo will start sprouts farther and far More..

Cat is mine, named BP. The Chihuahua is Roxie, my GF's dog. Roxie broke her arm and has been staying with me the past few weeks to recover, since my GF's dogs are puppies and too rough. BP and Roxie get along great!

Ummm, no, not named after the oil spill!
The cat wandered into my yard a few years ago and just made herself at home. I had no intention of keeping her, as I am not much of a cat person. Well, after a few days I was sitting on my porch holding her and petting her and my redneck friend says "Rick, I didn't know how much you liked black pussy"; so that's how she got her name.

I thought you might like to see some mutant ones. I’d love the gold one in the pics (figure 4) but they are rare as can be, and would be worth a small fortune if you get one and clone them.

Wow, the golden ones are spectacular. Never knew about the variegated ones either. To the untrained eye (mine) the variegated ones almost look like they're dying, but there is beauty in the symmetry. Thanks for the link!
