The Rubbish People of Egypt

A dark side to Egypt that the authorities don't want foreigners to see: a secretive society of tens of thousands of people literally living in rubbish in a Cairo ghetto overrun by rats and disease. Filmed inside the ghetto where they live with garbage stacked to the roofs of their multi-storey homes, they recycle the rubbish by hand. It's a sight rarely seen by outsiders. This group is unique for another reason. They're part of Muslim Egypt's Christian minority; a community claiming to be besieged by persecution, extremism and a creeping Islamisation in Egypt's security services. This video highlights one the most sensitive issues faced by some of those in Egypt - their decision to convert to Christianity - decision that some Muslims believe should be punishable by death under a strict interpretation of Islamic sharia religious law.

  • Slums ... its far worse in India.
    Never the less a truth remains.
    How bad does it have to be to prefer living with garbage over persecution and abuse?
    What stereotypical stigma do the Arabs place on them for doing so?
    I'm left with the notion that Muslims fear being treated as they already do treat Christans.
    What else do they have to compare it to? The Koran?

    Almost anywhere you find a muslim controlled government you find trash cities and a mass divide between rich and poor.

  • And why didnt you visit the GOLD trading area , they are all christians as well , and a lot of my dear friends and colleages are christians and they are respectful people , so everyone choose his disteny whethere a muslim or christian

    • How can you say or think this?

      This documentary gives a great view on how a group of Christians live in Egypt. A view that the government is trying to not get out. In that way the documentary gets political. The rest of the political side of the documentary is the Christians complaining about the restraints they got from the government for having their Christian believes.

      Great documentary, one of the best I've seen of Liveleak.
