Westboro Baptist Church Protests at Ground Zero

iReport — For the vast majority of people near what is universally known as "Ground Zero," site of the World Trade Center in New York, there was a somber mood on the tenth anniversary of the September 11th Attacks. However, one group in particular - the Westboro Baptist Church which is known for protesting military funerals and using slogans such as "God hates fags," was in full force protesting very loudly during both the singing of the American National Anthem and speeches given by President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg.

Singing "modified" protest versions of "God Bless America" and the "Marines Hymn," the Westboro group made it a point to interrupt the ceremonies as vocally as possible. One Westboro protester wore an upside down American flag in her waistband and danced as if a 1960's era hippie while carrying a sign that said, "God hates you." A man watching next to this reporter said, "God will forgive you," referring to the woman previously mentioned. When asked by this reporter, the man who indicated he was from Boston said, "I know its their Constitutional Right, but I still think it is sick."

Less than ten minutes afterwards, the protesters were gone. This reporter is unsure if it was the police that removed them or they left of their own accord but the mood of the crowd was substantially improved. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-672522?ref=feeds%2Flatest
