Our War"The lost Platoon" Part 1 of 3
Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

Further stories of life on the frontline in Afghanistan, seen through films shot by the soldiers themselves. It's May 2009 and a Welsh Guards platoon deep in Taliban country falls into a deadly ambush, just yards from the isolated mud fort which is their patrol base. Seven Platoon is led by the regiment's brightest young officer, Lt Mark Evison, who keeps a candid war diary revealing dangerous shortages of manpower and equipment. They are just two weeks into their tour of duty, and already a vital piece of equipment - an essential radio cable - has failed. As the Taliban tighten their noose around Seven Platoon, putting IEDs on the roads and attacking their small fort, even the most vital spares cannot get to them quickly. This film tells the gripping story of how the lack of one small cable has lethal consequences and leads to a platoon of the Welsh Guards' toughest soldiers nearly being massacred.

    • @MB-UK -Your government got you into that war, maybe you should reevaluate who is the traitor here are move to a country with a government you thinks as you do. Let's be honest here, if the majority of your country didn't want to be part of the conflict, you simply wouldn't be; but they do.

    • @MB-UK -An honest one. I'm not intending to be rude, I simply don't understand people who live in free countries who blame their government and not the ones who are running it... namely the people.

  • Great upload. This episode really got personal. It's going to take a long time to mend those heads.

  • I don't want to act like the keyboard warrior here, but it always amazes me how the USAF forces need to rely on airpower and artillery to get things done. Here we have a group of highly trained professional soldiers running away from a fight with poorly trained and equiped part time farmers.

Don't get me wrong, I can imagine the terror of being shot at, but i'm not a soldier trained for doing this.

    • @distantkilljoy It's actually likely (from their own ommission) that nothing was hit at all. Hide n go seek masters. Apparently not sharp shooters though. And for this reason they are all alive. Apart from the CO. RIP Evison.

  • I love these comments, People moan like fuck when anyone meantions the war or the military, 'argh my tax money', 'pointless war' etc. but the minute the Brits take a few rounds 'Wheres the air support', 'why dont they have the right equipment' etc. Wake up dickheads ! You want them to have good kit start fucking supporting them...SUPPORTING YOUR TROOPS IS NOT THE SAME AS SUPPORTING THE WAR ! These are human beings who are under the belief that they are fighting for our freedom...If you dont like More..

  • My son has done tours of Afghan, and Iraq.Hes spoke to me about Iraq, not so much Afghan. I think he keeps that to his mates who where there with him.We went to one of his friends engagement parties the other week.It was touching to the brotherhood amongst them.Lots of group hugging, and a general sense of male bonding.Maybe one day i will find out more?

  • It is very interesting when the British speak about the war they say, "America started this war... They just want oil... They're just trying to hide their ties to Al Qaeda... They are trying to bully the rest of the world... They are warmongers or elitists...", but here they call it "Our War". I'm not trying to disrespect anyone or make light of this conflict, I just think it is interesting how blame and ownership is being represented here. I hope everybody makes it home in o More..

    • @iNOTHINGyou It's because you're misinterpreting what "Our War" means. It's not about ownership or blame, it's about those guys there and then...nothing else matters.

    • @CargeLock -Why are they there if the UK (and the British people) don't support the war? It's not like they [Jihadists] came to your country and twisted your arms to join in.

    • @iNOTHINGyou We did, on the whole, support the war, but that is neither here nor there; support of the war and supporting our troops are two very different things. There is generally huge support for all of our troops, but many feel that the task of war in Afghanistan has been mismanaged and gone on way too long.

Whatever the political situation, that will never ever detract from supporting our lads.

The job should have been done and dusted in 2001/3 when bush had laden by the gonads, but he w More..

    • @CargeLock -I can not argue with that. I do honestly hope that dastardly war is over soon. Many wars of the past go one far to long due to mismanagement and propaganda.

  • I said this before.

Without airpower British and American soldiers would be hunted and exterminated like headless chicken. These are cowards invading our peoples lands. Without airpower your invading donkeys would have needed thousands of extra body bags.
