Neighbor: Alleged Abduction Victim Glad To Be Home Reporting
Woman Allegedly Kidnapped, Driven To Ohio (12/30/2008)
Neighbors are reacting to the alleged abduction of an elderly woman from a Pittsburgh neighborhood.
"It sounds like a Hollywood movie, or a movie stunt scene," says Katie Evans, a longtime neighbor of 86-year Evelyn Poynter, who lives on Clarissa Street, in the Sugar Top neighborhood, in Pittsburgh's Hill District section.
Pittsburgh Police say Poynter was abducted and partially duct-taped yesterday by her 72-year-old sister, Laura Stewart, and her sister's boyfriend 76-year-old Earl Cross. The pair allegedly drove Poynter around for eight hours - ending up at Stewart's home, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, outside Cleveland.
Stewart, Cross, and a third person, 48-year old Darnell Randall, of the Hill District, all face kidnapping-related charges.
Pittsburgh Police Lt. Kevin Kraus said Poynter was not allowed to leave the car she was placed in and she had to relieve herself in plastic containers during the kidnapping.
Evans doesn't believe the abduction incident was done with the intention of harming her elderly neighbor, but rather Stewart believed her older sister was unable to care for herself any longer because of recent surgery.
Evans told KDKA-TV that she spoke to Poynter after police brought her back home. She said she sounded and looked fine, adding that Poynter said she wasn't going anywhere - she just wanted to be home again.
