The Paras
Winning membership of the Parachute Regiment is reputedly one of the most coveted postings for a British squaddie - this series shows the trials and tribulations of basic training, and the work and discipline involved in attaining the maroon beret, right the way through to first posting.
The Paras is a 7 part BBC made series that follows a platoon of potential paratroopers from the moment they step from the train as civilians, to the culmination of their training and deployment on active service. Made in 1982 on the verge of the Falklands war, it goes on to prove in dramatic fashion how valid and current the training was for these men. The executive producer on the series was David Harrison, a former paratrooper, and has managed to bring a real "insider" feel to the series. Narrated in parts, this really is a first class production that has you glued to your screens as you experience the pain and agony that the recruits are subjected to in an effort to gain the coverted Maroon Beret. At every stage of their training the viewer is captivated by the fact that not all of the recruits will make the grade, in fact as many as 75% fall by the wayside!
e04. P Company
'P Company' is a three day test that separates the Parachute Regiment from the rest of the Army and, after 11 weeks, only 20 of the 41 recruits who started remain to take the test. Two hours after the test is completed the fate of which recruits have passed and which have failed is decided

@para001 While going through Ranger school, we had some which had recycled up to 3 times. Pretty brutal to rehash a complete training cycle, yet respect given for guys as such who wanted it badly enough to go through it again.

@Koranimal Agreed. If you want it bad enough i guess nothing will stop you getting there. But give everything on the first to save the agony. :)

Excellent series, would love to see it in its entirety. Although examining the training cycles of becoming a British Para, I see similarities in training procedure and outcomes referenced to my Ranger training. Pushing oneself, pain, team concept and determination are present for any who has stepped out of the norm to ascend or aspire to take it to another level. Excellent series.

I remember out in Germany, all the Army types looked like Al Slater RIP. I remember having to travel up to Scotland from Coningsby for a wedding in a car with some raf types, a signals guy and a para, the banter got progressively scarier as we got closer to Scotland. I'm pretty convinced the para would have done us all without letting go of his can of tenants and then drank all our beer for good measure.

Wow, brings back memories.
This came out when I was 16 and was planning to apply to join the Paras.
Of course I had to watch this series, and it caused me to change my mind lol.
