In what has to be the worst case of wasteful packaging in the history of modern conveniece, a grocery store in Austria is actually selling pre-peeled bananas that have then been re-packaged in cellophane-covered foam trays.
One of the reasons bananas have been billed as the world’s most perfect food is that they come with their own biodegradable packaging straight off the tree. And it’s not like you need a knife or some wacky kitchen contraption to peel them — the skin practically falls off on its own. Not surprisingly most customers are up in arms over the ridiculous repackaging stunt, except for the chain’s animated clientele who are optimistic the banished peels will dramatically reduce the risk of countless cartoon slipups.
What’s even more maddening is that the supermarket chain’s slogan urges customers to use more common sense when shopping. “Paper, plastic, or ironic, sir?”

My favorite is the printer cartridges that arrive packaged in three pounds of impenetrable styrene and cardboard and a little envelope so I can mail back used cartridges for recycling.

that's pretty bad. the other day i saw packages of two potatos put onto a styrofoam tray and covered with plastic wrap. at the store they will put a plastic bag full of apples into another plastic bag at checkout. they will put a gallon jug of milk into a plastic bag. i thought that was silly but prepeeled nanners? huh?

Billa is a European grocery chain. I have never seen this in the USA before. Are people seriously too lazy to peel a banana?
You gotta wonder how they keep them from turning brown....they must be treated with something.

@Baron_Kaz Good point. Saw a neighbor at the grocery one day. She was there to return a "hard" banana. Cut that sucker up to put in her cereal.

seems funny but how many of you buy melons this way? you can buy a large coke for a lower price than a small one in a store solely based on the fact that the smaller one is chilled. a store will sell yogurt in an 8 pack that looks nice.. and sometimes its cheaper to buy them in singles.

I am lazy but this takes laziness to a whole new level. I am actually struggling to think of anything more pointless that could be done with fresh food. Unless of course you find the colour yellow offensive, then it is perfectly reasonable.
