EAST WILLIAMSBURG (WABC) --
People were screaming and yelling, while others rushed to the car that
ran over grandmother Elizabeth Castillo, her three-year-old grandson,
Tyreese Owens, and a 17-month-old little girl, who was first rescued
from her stroller, which had been crushed in the accident.

Others were frantically trying to reach the three-year-old
boy trapped under the car. Several men then got around, and began
lifting, as Elizabeth Castillo was pulled from under the car and was
helped by others. The little boy was then rescued. "There were
little tiny babies under there. He smashed the carriages flat as if you
folded them up. They were smashed underneath them," said eyewitness Kim
Miller.

Paramedics and firefighters who arrived then took over lifesaving
measures by stabilizing the victims, and rushing them off to Bellevue
Hospital. "I am just praying and hoping for the best," said
the victim's daughter, Camille Castillo, "She wasn't able to talk to me
because she has a couple of broken ribs. So hard for her to breathe and
talk, but she's stable." The car was driven by a man who
appeared to be in his 70s, Eyewitnesses say. He hit the white car first,
as some believe he was trying to park. Then the car lurched up on the
sidewalk backwards and struck the three victims, pushing them through a
chain-link fence. One man tried to help lift the car.


"We just all got together and tried, four of us, to lift it, but we
couldn't. More people came and we got the lady and two babies out," said
eyewitness Walik Veason. The car that struck them was a 2002 Hyundai.

The driver suffered no injuries, and will not be charged.
