DETROIT -- FOX 2's blanket coverage began last week when we first reported that Detroit paramedic Jeff Gaglio had been charged by fire brass for giving a donated blanket away to a feeble, half naked, shivering old man whose house had just caught fire.
"I'm being punished for giving a man a blanket," Gaglio said in our report on October 10.
"We can't have an employee who feels that they have a right to give away state property, be it donated, be it a blanket, be it a tire off a vehicle," Chief Jerald James also said in that same story.
The internet burned with international outrage. Friday, hundreds of blankets arrived at fire headquarters from around the globe.
"It was about a blanket to a man that needed a blanket at the time, nothing more, nothing less. The city is the only one who has made it about more than that," Gaglio said.
Embarrassed, the city tried to pull the wool, calling our story "blatantly false", but Friday, Fire Commissioner Don Austin was singing a different tune.
"The member is not getting charged. Yes, charge papers were served unbeknownst to me, and so they have been shredded. That is not the issue," Austin said. "We will accept the blankets. We will figure out how we're going to distribute them, whether we put them at fire stations and notify the public that if they want a blanket, they can go to the fire station, or we'll put them on our ambulances and give them out as need be."
** The City of Detroit is covering its ass, though not very well. They screwed up big time. The public has seen another example of bureaucrats out of control, but support for the little guy won the day.**
Cheers to Charlie LeDuff and all those who donated.

Fire Commissioner Don Austin and Chief Jerald James, among other public servants now, are realizing the insane viral power of public opinion and mobilization via the internets. Pathetic 'phone-in' was a day late and a buck short, boys. Have fun with your new online presence..

Well in that case they better make sure they get all their medical supplies back off all the sick or injured people that they take to hospital because you can't be giving away expensive shit like that just because someone's dying...

It's not like these people have insurance anyway and besides, the city is BROKE due to the progressive dogma's of the past 1/2 century. When federal $$ dries up, more EMT layoffs will be going over like police layoffs....
Hey blame the RICH for the failed liberal utopia !!

I work for California municipal government. I can tell you that some government workers are some of most brain-dead, stupid and soul-less people on the planet. And the higher up they are, the more likely they are to be complete sociopaths with no concern for anything but rules and making up more of them.

It is political if you think about it... Why was this man almost charged??... Because red tape and bloated regulations trumped common sense... Seems to be happening allot in the liberal world these days

The true problem is taking responsibility for actions.
Acknowledging the mistakes.
They rather just blame someone else and keep their ideology alive.

Rules and policies are to be followed...but when COMMON FUCKING SENSE comes along, you DO THE RIGHT THING, and the rules don't apply. Detroit obviously views their employees as robots and not people.
