"Re-Make/Re-Model" is a song written by Bryan Ferry that appears as the opening track on Roxy Music's eponymous debut album.

The recording starts with a musique concrète introduction, a short collage of cocktail party noise, before launching into a stereotypical 1950s song structure. Whilst the basic backing track of guitar, acoustic piano, bass guitar, tenor saxophone and drums is relatively straightforward and traditional in form, other elements of the arrangement are quite bizarre and futuristic: Eno plays continual squalls of atonal oscillator noise from his Electronic Music Studios VCS3 synthesizer, whilst Ferry's lead vocal style is strikingly distraught and anguished in tone. The lead guitar and saxophone solos in the middle of the song also tend to cacophony. At the end of the song, each instrument is allowed a short solo break in turn; the bass guitar solo mimics the riff from the Beatles song "Day Tripper".

The lyrics describe a man that likes the look of a woman, but is afraid to approach her. Ferry explained in an interview that Eno and MacKay's backing vocal chorus of "CPL 593H" was the number plate of the car in which the woman is riding. Ferry took inspiration from a personal experience - the number plate CPL 593H belonged to a car he previously owned, a blue 1970 Mini Clubman. After it had left his ownership he saw it parked in a street, and on going to look at it observed an attractive young woman get into the car and drive away. Thus, in true Ferry style, the song was indirectly about 'the girl'.

Ferry reworked "Remake/Remodel" on his Let's Stick Together album (1976). The song was covered by Frank Black on his Oddballs collection of B-sides and rarities and he performed it live while touring with The Catholics.

  • One of the greatest bands ever.
DECADES ahead of their time. Individual immense musical talents... Ferry, Eno, Thompson, Mackay, and the great Phil Manzanera.

Saw them twice in the 70's. 4th row and 1st row.
    F@cking awesome!

  • I guess the review posted refers to the recorded version.
Interesting VSC3s (Putneys) are a dream machine. I've used them a few times, when I conned my way into the local university studio, but I could never afford one.

  • Hmm....

Bryan Ferry. Great looks, unique singer, uber cool in the 1970's when quite frankly everyone else was not.

Remains uber cool to this day.
Last I heard, he was living in a castle in Ireland.

Once had Brian Eno (AKA "Brain One") as part of his backing band.

This is all too much perhaps. Time for daggers!

Maybe not. Love you Bryan, you're 65 and still being uber cool and showing the way.

Never a pop star, never a rock star, just a standard to look up to.

    Doing your own thin More..

  • A girl I was living with at one time, who, when on LSD and upon listening to Roxy Music's 'Amazona' exclaimed," We shouldn't be here, only God belongs here", well, that pretty much sums up the Roxy Music experience for me.

  • I think we should have David Byrne and Talking Heads in the same room here.

This film comes to mind -

The group is mimicking a guitar.
Watch the black gals - they're playing bass :-)))

I think that various Strategic Arms Limitation Agreements were emplaced years ago to stop Bryan Ferry and David Byrne from coming within 100ft of each other.

  • I saw their first gig , they backed Alice Cooper at Wembley . So they had big backing from the start , you dont play Wembley first gig no matter how good you are . Also the Album was released before the gig , because I bought it the next day in Glasgow when I got home . And to me , that was it , that album's great the rest was shit . Unique , but crap . And Ferry's a dick , if he was chocolate he'd eat himself .
