step closer to re-opening ahead of schedule. Crews have now moved a brand new section of the span into place. They worked overnight to haul the 67-hundred ton section of the bridge into place. The move happened from 11:40 pm (PST) Sunday night (9/2) until just about 2:00 am (PST) Monday morning (9/3). Sixteen hydraulic jacks, all of them synchronized by a computer, pushed the slab up and over into place. The slab moved just three feet every five minutes, but it went so well that today construction crews say they are ahead of schedule. Cal Trans will announce this afternoon whether the bridge will open tonight as opposed to tomorrow morning (9/4). The bridge was shutdown Friday night about 8:40 pm (PST) and since then crews have been demolishing a section of the bridge to make room for this new part. This project is part of a seismic retrofit that CalTrans has been working on
