A BNSF Railway southbound loaded coal train, operating at 36 mph entered an occupied siding through a switch mistakenly left open by a switch crew earlier in the day in non-signal territory and collided with a cut of stationary cars parked there.
As a result of the collision, twenty six cars and two locomotives were derailed. Both crewmen were injured but did survive. Damages estimated to exceed $1,000,000. Both crew members have sense retired. The switch crew who mistakenly left the switch open was relieved of duty indefinitely.
